Jia Lu 2009, Incandescent, oil on canvas, 66 x 96 inches.This was a BIG painting, perhaps the largest I've ever done. I finished it last year, but only received the scans recently. Sorry about the reflections.
This was the featured painting at my booth in the Fine Art Beijing show in Nov 2009.

I can't stop looking at that robe. Every time I stare at it, a new set of brushstrokes stands out. I don't even have the words for how beautiful and inspiring I find this, makes me wish I could see the real thing.
I'm new to painting in oil. May I ask how you achieved such luminosity in the robe? Do you paint a light under-painting and use glazes?

This painting began with the model - I was looking for an undramatic pose, and dressed her up in a gauze veil. I have a big fan and set it to blowing her veil around. I made some loose sketches and decided what I really wanted was to fill the canvas with billowing fabric. The idea of lighting her from behind to show off the fabric came later, and out of that developed the idea of the sun rising over the edge of the earth.
As for the painting process itself, I began, as I do with all my work, with a charcoal sketch and a thin wash of color, then blocked in the figure. Once I finished the fabric I came back to the face and refined it further, then warmed up the background. It actually took three years from concept to completion, working in brief week-long spurts here and there.
