This is one of the most profound works I've seen in quite a while.
What first captured my attention was the physical beauty of the woman. Beauty to the point of perfection, combined with what's obviously an intentional, subtle lack of clarity (compare this painting to First Light ). Obviously a goddess, an evocation of the divine. I never was a fan of Plato's theory of the forms but this painting makes me realize that Jia Lu has revealed through her brush strokes a vision of something uplifting, beautiful and Good. Whatever this 'something' is, it exists independently of this painting or any other work of art. When I am privileged to access a portal to view (or hear) this, I realize something important that cannot be expressed with words. This is common in Jia Lu's works - she is truly a master.
The lower part of the painting is represented by somewhat earth-toned, tattered remnants of a shawl which both reveal and hide a vague hint of a torso. The shawl and torso seem to merge, or perhaps float weightlessly, from the unseen ground. Her hand effectively splits the painting from the earthly to the divine, intimate, feminine creative energy.
My eye is led up to the spectacular, liquid golden light which caresses her shoulders and reveals what I feel is the most spectacular detail in the painting, the woman's stunning braid. I don't know why but the only way I can describe this braid and then the angle of her head, her royal aspect, is nothing less than perfect. Yes, perfect.
The physical intimacy of the woman's naked body, her delicate skin and hair, contrast with her preoccupied look away from the viewer to the distance. We may be fascinated by her, but her attention is definitely somewhere else.
Finishing he trip up to the top of the painting the heavenly light behind her head abruptly ends with undetailed black strokes intimating the night sky. Earth and sky; human and divine; sacred and profane. As above, so below. The microcosm mirroring the macrocosm.
