Description As the USS Amberwitch sits in spacedock, engineers in travel pods inspect its hull.

The travel pod model is essentially a cut down version of my civilian shuttlecraft model, with the warp and impulse engines removed.

Rendered using POV-Ray 3.6 on 22nd September 2012.

This is a really GREAT shot, I love the angle and all the unfinished ship stuff/girders. Well done!!!

This is a really an interesting view of the ship. I am a fan of the Oberth design. It has such versatility and usefulness. My only quandary has been why someone has not submitted a version that filled in that "V" shaped space formed by the nacelle pylons, and beneath the primary hull and secondary hull. I have always thought that this added space would create a more simplified access-way to the secondary hull, as well as give added overall strength and integrity to the ship. Have you every seen anything like this configuration?

I haven't really seen anything like the configuration you suggest. The closest I have seen is a variant of my own that I did a while back which uses the space on top of the lower hull for cargo containers, see fav.me/d4u2y5o

I really should revisit that design some day.

Sorry for the long delay in responding. Thanks for commenting.

Nice! TOS era Oberth class. Never seen anyone do one of these before

Thanks. I always liked the Grissom/Oberth design, and I was puzzled that people didn't make more use of it. You see lots of designs inspired by the Enterprise, the Reliant and the Excelsior, but you hardly ever see any inspired by the Grissom. So I decided to have a go myself. I was very happy with the way it turned out.

I agree. I know a person that actually replaced the secondary haul of an excelsior class and replaced it with the secondary haul of the oberth. Outcome was pretty nifty.

Thanks. I was afraid the Amberwitch model wouldn't look very good this close up, and it could indeed use a bit more surface detail, but it came out better than I expected.

Thank you, it's not easy to give a proper sense of the size of these ships. And of course, this ship is SMALL by Star Trek standards!

true. but it's still BIG!

'first time I've seen the Oberth-class not look like a little model but a real ship-love it.
