Description A portrait I did of Abby, our golden retriever, as a gift for my brother, who just happens to be Abby's favourite human . He's redecorating his house, too - hopefully it will make a decent picture to put up on his wall...

7.5x9.75 Graphite.

I miss my dog so much... She's got a wonderfully sweet personality, but then again, it seems like most golden retrievers do :3

Holy geeze that is exquisite work.. I'm too lazy to put such effort into detail. You must have a lot of patience ^__^; lol

*chuckles* Thank you very much... Yes, it was a little trying on my patience at times, but I just thought about who I was making it for, and how happy I was about how it was turning out, and it made me feel like my time and effort were worth it

SiennaBlue In reply to jocarra [2005-03-05 09:15:57 +0000 UTC]

Not entirely sure what he's mixed with. I didn't get him until he was about 2 years old. Theories abound. All I know for sure is that he's beautiful and he's my best bud.

It wasn't too much work, but it was quite a challenge Thanks for the comment

GrueneWolken In reply to jocarra [2005-03-01 00:47:45 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine that it was a challenge. Animals aren't easy to draw, and what is hardest is to make them seem alive, which you managed perfectly. Well done

i dont really like the dark eyes but the fur shading is wonderful The dogs expression is captured very well

jocarra In reply to furryphotos [2004-07-31 05:02:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! Yeah, it's a pity about the eyes. If I had the original, I'd go back and touch it up. They were like that in the photo reference, but I should've brightened them up, anyways . Thanks for the comment!

cfitzart [2004-07-28 08:22:14 +0000 UTC]

wow another excellent dog portrait.. i wish i could draw fur like that, i never have the patience with hair or fur! how can you stand to do it? the white background works well so the detail stands out for the page. cute whiskers too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to cfitzart [2004-07-28 08:26:32 +0000 UTC]

Tee hee! And again - thanks! I'm trying to better learn to draw fur, too. I'm not one of those anthrophiles that are artistically fluent in all things furry, so it's still a real challenge for me. Thank god I had photo references. They save me, really.

That reminds me... I have another puppy portrait to post (excuse the alliteration), but I don't have a good scan of it yet

voodoochild84 [2004-02-04 02:05:22 +0000 UTC]

you are definitely skilled with the graphite medium

my only problem is how dark and flat the nose and eyes seem to me, mayhaps it is the scan, but they just seem to be lacking a bit of tone, maybe a few 'unrealistic' highlights to define the wetness of the eyes and nose... not sure exactly without seeing it.

overall a very wonderful rendering, i would be proud to hang such a fine portrait of my dog on my wall.

wow, the attention to detail is amazing, more than id like to count really.. i know people talk about human expression but this has one all its own

major work on the fur too, you can look and see each individual strand, the way they flow is soo realistic having seen a golden retreiver many years of my life.. simply unsurpased

well done again

Great detail on the coat - really very, very good. I would have added a small, white spot as a 'shine' in the eye though, to make it a bit more alive. But that fur... whoa..

Awesome.

Detail. Gah. This is lovely. The perspective is a but funny, a little to exaggerated, but I think that adds to the charm of the pic.

How amusing. My name's Abby. Well, nickname, anyway.

jocarra In reply to cacopheny [2003-12-27 01:36:33 +0000 UTC]

*chuckles* Yes, the perspective is a little off, but only because my photo references were taken at a close angle, creating a fishlens-type effect. I still like it *chuckles* although I appreciate the critique.

wow that is very good. the thing i find most impressive is the detail in the dog's coat. i always find textured surfaces quite a challenge, but this looks excellent. i also love her* expression. well done.
*i assume with the name abby it's a female?.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to voodoodolly [2003-12-26 20:59:17 +0000 UTC]

*chuckles* Yes, Abby's a female. I'm glad you like her expression - her favourite human had just left and was watching the door hoping he would return when I snapped my reference photos. I think it turned out pretty accurate . And thanks for your compliments on my texture work. I find texture gives me problems, too, sometimes, but practice and patience always help Thanks again!

i admire your work. Ya seem to have no problems with pencil ;p it`s also hard to draw animal. I tried to make portrait of my dog but it`s immposible to make her stand stil. Well..maybe one day

jocarra In reply to bushateq [2003-12-26 09:08:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Pencil is my strongest medium, although I'm not entirely terrible in PhotoShop. I can't get my dog to sit still either, so what I did was got someone to attract her attention while I snapped a few reference photos on my digital camera. If you have one, I highly suggest you try it out!
