Try playing with my brother's Disc Spiral Tutorial but instead of a Spherical Final transform use an Ngon final transform. Just leave the fxf at the origin until you you understand how all the parameters work.
I haven't found NGon very useful as a regular transform. In this flame NGon is the final transform. It is just a basic part of a much more complex flame. I've got Disc, JuliaN and blur that do most of the work.

I just realized that I didn't give you a link to the tutorial I mentioned. It is here [link] if you don't have it already. It isn't a beginner's tutorial, but it does have some really good ideas in it, if you're interested. It inspired me a lot!
