Description EDIT 7/11 - I'll be attempting to remove the derpiness from his face when I get time

Drawing for ~AnCatDubh , who won ~northangel27 's Snapely contest.
I was happy to learn AnCat is a fan of Symbolist artist Gustav Klimt, which made this work very enjoyable for me. The decorative figures surrounding Snape are a nod to Klimt, with a bit of Fernand Khnopff included, for what I hope is good measure. Check this slideshow for his sublime work - [link]
The figures represent Snape's canon love, Lily Evans, interpreted here as childhood friend, and tragic beauty. In the spirit of Symbolism, I have also included her as a stern and unforgiving Harpy, her red wings enveloping Snape drinking absinthe, contemplating the lonely evening, and the second glass by the bottle.
This is a mostly traditional work with some color in PS. The texture is by *buzillo-stock - [link]

Thanks to friend *sayurikemiko for help with the pose

your welcome - I know that, I never really know when a painting is really finished - could go on and on withit, looking it it sometimes for years you always find something you could improve... sometimes you just have to stop. I always do several paintings at a time, and they get finished more or less at the same time. Wish you all the best and a lot of fun and inspiration

Wow, I envy you're being able to work on several things at once! I've never been able to focus on more than 2 projects at a time, and that's kind of pushing it, I prefer one at a time Thanks - same to you.

well, I don't think you have to envy me XD, It's just a general working attitude of mine. When I clean the hous (once in a while), I use the same technique: I start in some corner, go on to something else, and a third thing, and in the ongoing process it all becomes ONE BIG MESS, but in the end everything finishes at about the same time and is great - except me, who is totally exhausted
I called this method deconcentrated concentration
Love and blessings

I'm wondering what it would look like without a texture.. Does that (particular texture) really add to the painting, or doesn't it?

Anyway, nice symbolism, and I like it muchly, as always :)

Wonderful! I love how you took such rich tones and "subdued" (or is it sub-hued?) them. Gives me a mental image of a Snape in whose life the "color" has begun to fade with his Lily, and all he has is memories.

joeyv7 In reply to RosesAndThorns [2010-01-06 12:09:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Jodi. It was tempting to simply build off the texture of the background stock and make it about the lovely effects, but I caught myself doing that in time before it overshadowed the figure and overall message. (Not boasting here, I just found it interesting that if I wasn't careful, the 'tools' I used could actually take over the whole process ) I used a layer of yellow orange paint over all of this to unify the whole thing.

Thanks I appreciate that - I doubt he drinks to excess because of his awful father, but if he does, I see him getting blotto on absinthe once in a blue moon or so XD

I love it! the colors are a perfect match for all the emotions you can read out of his face and pose...even the way he holds the glass...perfect.Love the Tragic Lily and even more the Harpy one...and you put a second glass there, a lonely unused glass...waiting for someone to join him...perfect!
and let's not forget the nose..

My god, I feel overflowed with amazing Snapes these days, thanks to you and

I just want to put silly smiley faces all over the comment but will refrain ( )

First of all I really like the way you coloured the piece, the light and darkness... He feels trapped in his obsession here, to me... It's not something I have seen very much in fanart. Lily always seems to be an embodiment of perfection and purity. But this shows how terrible obsessive love can really be. Makes me wonder how he dealt with the pain over the years, how much he was able to shut his emotions even to himself. He must have had way too much time to mull these things over. And your drawing is right, it must have been such a mixture of feelings.

And yeah... That skull is not obvious but my eyes keep being drawn to it. Very nice -very important- detail.

Thank you so much for this ! Very inspiring melancholy...

I am so relieved you like it. I seem to like depicting the contemplative Snape, at a relative peace; but this would scarcely be a peaceful moment for you or I. Snape is in some ways an ideal Symbolist subject, locked in eternal devotion to what could only be an Ideal, and subsequently being filled with self - loathing when faced with his actual, real life.

You're right, and it's one of the main reasons that make him so fascinating to me. He is such an archetype. He embodies something so much bigger than himself. Ahhhh... *sigh* Well, it's Snape

Thank you Alexandra . . . I thought about including your poem, 'There is Silence' (well the poem you quoted, I know you didn't write it) but . . . although he is in a safe place, this didn't quite fit. I will use it in future though

That's a beautiful poem, I guess I forgot that you wrote it I archived that in an 'ideas' folder here. It speaks to me, and I know will be inspiration. I only hope the work will do it justice Again I'm sorry!! Geeze, I should have know you wrote that
