The winged saurs flit and curve across the scape like notes of a permanent soundtrack- one you've visited many times before I assume. The figure (maybe yourself) radiates a dejavu type feeling from the way he seems to levitate in the saddle area- likes he's taking the seat again at the centre of this dream.

. I love the green effect, like water over mossy stone, almost sculptural (is that a word?) .... The clouds and rock forms seem to echo the actions of the living creatures, and on the point of morphing themselves.

It has a realness and an oldness that others of this type of fantasy art never seem to contain. You know, the ones that make you think of a video game. whereas yours has a definite old masters feel.

Wow, thanks so much! I'm so honored by everything you just said. I don't know what else to say... Everything you described resonates with something inside me... You've fueled my ambition, that's for sure!

No problem. Your pictures, as anyone would tell you, need no describing. The pleasure was mine, having the chance to admire your work aloud.

((Woah, awesome. Your choice of which brush to use was good. It just invokes this kind of mysterious, soft and misty look to the setting. I enjoy the concept of his steed, and the limited colour palette really accentuates the otherworldly effect on this painting. Amazing.))

Thanks heaps! I'm so very glad this painting evokes that kind of atmosphere, I was really trying to make it look quite dream-like and mysterious as you said. Thanks again for the kind words!

((You are very welcome! Your effort was definitely not wasted. It actually did evoke that kind of atmosphere, and you did amazing with it. {How many times have I said that now? Don't even ask how many times I have thought of it.} No problem once more. ))

Thanks so much! I was a bit worried it was a bit too much light but I'm using the whole fantasy thing as an excuse.

Really nice concept, and your forms are good, but the shadows are all blacked out, the highlights blown and the textures uniform. A few quick environment studies from reference would definitely double the quality here! Keep at it!

I really love everything you've put in the picture to convey "freedom" ^^ A vast, exploreable landscape, a flying bird-dinosaur, an adventurer, and even more monsters in the sky In that, it's perfect.
But I think you've used the grain/texture a bit too much. If it's used everywhere, it looks a bit more like you've put a filter on the entire picture, than the actual texture of mountains.

JohnPatsakios In reply to CharlottaBavholm [2013-01-02 15:07:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! And I absolutely agree - I did go overboard with the texture brush (I default to using lots of grain because I'm a grainy kind of guy). I've plonked it into Photoshop and am mucking around with it - will see what I can do to improve it! Thanks for the constructive crit!

Haha yeah it's an easy mistake to make, those textures improve the picture so much you get tempted to use them all over XD
