Firstly, I love the concept of this piece. It's in depth and stunning in it's execution. From the zoomed out view it's absolutely prefect. The colors and darkness all work really well together. The angel fish (I think that's what they are anyway) are lovely, I would like to see one of them toward the bottom though, to take the red through the entire composition, maybe behind her tail coming from between the eels tails.
As it is the red draws all the attention to the top of the piece which combined with the heavy detail, makes the piece just slightly top heavy, the patterns on the eels bodies/tails are great and as it is they're kind of lost when the view just gets a faint impression of the coils before they jump to the top of the piece.
In the close up view, the scale patterns are even more amazing, as well as the scales/makeup around Ariel's eyes. But the eyes are just a shade off. I think they're too big by a hair, but it's hard to say for sure.
Also, the eel on the far left, looking up toward Ariel, you wouldn't see both eyes. There's a similar problem with the one on the far right but it's not as noticeable or necessary to change since her arm is behind it and the effect isn't as dramatic as the one against the dark blue.
And this is just me but at the very end of her tail I kinda want to see the start of her fins, it can't taper much more and I want to see a good base for her fins to attach to.
Otherwise this is a beautiful piece. I had to really look and examine it before I could find anything to critique, but a critique wouldn't be the same without something to fix and everyone can improve. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> You're really talented and I'll be sure to watch you to see more of your stunning work in the future.

wow... just...wow
words can not describe the impact this put on me. i really do love this, the texture is amazing, i also love the eels, they remind me of demonic fish, which i have a feeling they are.
but anyways, the scales are amazing, she's so beautiful yet horrifying, like a siren, she gets your attention, then kills with more then just her beauty, she's simply gorgeous, no words can explain how amazing this image is, i just, i can't stop looking at it, your gallery is fascinating and you, your talent is by far one of the best, five stars by far my friend, i hope to someday be half as good of an artist as you, i have been drawing for a long time but i still have much to learn, i look forward to seeing more picture's like this, simply amazing Jonas, simply amazing.

Before I begin, let me start by saying that I have no right to critique you. You have a talent far surpassing my own. That being said, I like to think I have a great eye for details, and this is what I'm going to be basing most of my critique on.
Overall, I LOVE this piece. The idea of Ariel being the "bad girl" is something I've never seen before, and I think that you deserve major kudos for that.
The eels, obviously subservient to this darker version of Ariel, tie the picture together. There is no question about it. As soon as you see it, you immediately know, "Yup. Those eels are not very nice." The red eyes, their wicked teeth, their open mouths, which just screams, "I'm going to bite someone at any moment." Even how they seem to be emerging from the shadows around the picture. Eerie. Excellent work on the eels.
(I do notice their faces are very similar in shape to a dragon's, but hey, it works.)
As for Ariel herself, she's great, but I feel as if you made almost too many changes to her look. For example, her ear-fin things. You kind of have to stop and study the scenery before you come to the conclusion that this is, in fact, Ariel.
That being said, (and I'm not sure if this was intentional or not), I noticed how her bottom half looks like a fish tried to eat her, and got stuck at her waist. There's even what appears to be an eye and gills in the right general spot. I think that's devilishly clever. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/l/l⦠" width="19" height="19" alt="" title="La la la la"/>
The fish puzzle me. They seem a little out of place, almost as if they were tossed in as an afterthought. Don't get me wrong, they don't look like "happy fish", but they don't seem entirely right for this scene. Just my personal feelings. The colors on them are wonderful, though.
The only really big thing that I would say could be improved, as far as technique is concerned, is the lighting. I'm a lighting/shadow Nazi. I try to be, anyway. It's the difference between a good and great piece. Overall, the lighting, is wonderful, on the eels, the fish, and the lower half of Ariel's body. Going off of those (and the background) you know that the blueish light is coming from the bottom left area of the picture. But where is the light coming from that is illuminating Ariel's upper half? And why is it only lighting her up? Just something to think about, I suppose.
I'm going to end here, and I hope that some part of my rambling has some use for you. Also, don't put too much stock in everything I say, as I am, by and large, a photomanipulator, and couldn't draw or paint to save my life. Regardless, I love this piece overall, and I hope that some day I'll pull together half the talent you already possess.
Overall rating: Outstanding!

You say you have spent a long time on details and I have to say it shows. I think even her attitude suits someone/thing in her position of power (a princess of the deep).
I love the design of her tail (like a big fish ate her legs), and the horns that somewhat blends into her hair.
The only thing I'm not a fan of is the eels. I like the idea of them, but not sure I like the way they have been presented. One problem I have with them is the single fin on the back of their necks. The design seems a little out-of-place - I'm not sure, something just bothers me about the design. Also, the purple tones show their connection to Royalty, but purple is also a sign of wisdom. I'm not sure if this attribute was intended or even desired, but the glowing red eyes seem to oppose this idea: They give the monsters a sense of blood-lust and single-sightedness., as if they are mere puppets.
The overall shape of the face, which seems a little short and fat for a serpent-like monster, is also apparent. The one on the right looks a little menacing, where-as the two on the left not-so-much. I think this again relates to their eyes: they show a look of surprise more than anything.
Either way, the fact that they are tamed under Ariel's command really adds to her character and her own menacing look. Ariel's expression makes me wonder what evil thoughts are flowing behind those piercing eyes. Coupled with that ever-so-slight smile makes me feel like I'm nothing more than prey.

I have to say first, that the colors in this portrait are amazing and very eye catching! They are vibrant in a unique way and the colors around her eyes are especially attention getting! now, before hand, I would like to say this is very small and up to you to decide if this is fair, but, to me it seems her head to body proportions are a bit off, with the head being on the slightly small size, and her hips down being a bit bigger than they seem they should be (but I think that's due to the fish head and could not be avoided). Other than that, there is nothing to critique. And to you or others there may be nothing to critique, and maybe my eyes are crooked, but overall, this is a beautiful piece.

She was a creature of the sea
Half woman,
Half fish,
She wanted more to see, Than the fish of the deep,
She had seen the ships that sailed on by
Those that had sunken to the depths,
Tasted sailors hearts
As they sunk to the deep.
She had a Taste for those up above
But her father forbid it,
As she had tasted human flesh
She had been seen stripping it from the bone,
For the ships that sank
Were her doing to the depths they fell.
She enjoyed them warm,
Hearts,
Eyes,
Tongues,
Which she ripped out
With their drowning screams,
Then the left overs she fed to her
Friends of the deep.
She asked the witch, who knew her evil heart,
She said you have the hunger
I will help this once, a spell cast.
Black eels magic,
Eye of man,
Merman's gills,
Black death oil spilt,
What was once fish, make woman complete,
She woke upon a shore
A prince came upon, His heart she heard,
Then did awake, what is your name
She went to talk, but no voice did speak,
The witch had tricked her,
Curses spoke with no voice to speak.
She was taken to a castle, fed and dressed
Her clothes showed her womanly figure
Her breasts turned many a mans head,
For those that insulted,
There corpse thrown in to the deep,
But with one thing missing,
A hole where a heart did once beat.
She was of too ways she fell in love,
But the heart that beat smelled divine
Hunger,
Craving,
Hearts beat,
A kiss would seal his fate, but the witch
Had taken the voice of the siren of the deep,
She used her womanly ways
There was more than one way to hook a man
With out speech.
So she did what she did and he was hooked
At sea they were to wed
Not one kiss had pasted there lips
But the day had come dressed in white
This sinful woman of the deep,
Vows were said
Man to woman,
Woman to man,
In life and death you are now both wed,
The kiss tasted sweet, she could taste it
She felt the heart beat against her bosom
And to the bedroom they did retreat,
Lust and passion a new experience
To make love in water was wet
To be dry and wet beneath Satin sheets
He took her deep, she was in two hearts
As they came together screams heard
No worries to those outside
There vows were sown or at least you think
For the moment of ecstasy as both did explode
Under the sheets
She took his heart and devoured it whole
The look of fear left frozen on his face.
The ship did scream all through the night
As one after another, beats did stop their beat.
She went to the hull punched through with ease
Sea water filled as it sank to the deep,
Others finished what was started
But Ariel was holding her love in her arms
A tear on cheek, but not of love
Because royalty tasted better than any other
Stripped to the bone
His skeletal form lost to the deep.
She was now back in true form,
She was a princess a hunter of the deep
One last heart she did taste
Corrupt as hers
The witch had betrayed,
Now her essence is
Devoured,
Consumed,
Her power now Ariels
Beware the princess of the deep.
