"Remember"

One night I reached out to the sky
And asked of God: "Who am I?"
Though His face I could not see,
„What‘s your guess?“, He answered me.

„The world has labelled me a man,
Mortal, weak and quick to sin.
My friends told me that I belong,
Before, with time, they all were gone.

Judging by my devious past,
A failure is what I‘m at last.
Even my own thoughts tell me,
that I‘m a waste, not meant to be.

Feelings have me torn between
a worn old man or callow teen.
My body shifts from day to day,
subjected to time‘s sure decay.

So if you ask me for my guess,
I‘d say I‘m dust, or even less.
Unimportant as can be,
doomed to be a nobody.“

As I had finished my remarks
I waited for an answer harsh,
yet God paused for a moment and
with gentle voice He did amend:

„The world will call you many names,
Depending on your wealth and fame,
Friends can turn to enemies,
for that‘s a human tendency.

Yes, you‘re weak and often fail,
your past is like a twisted trail,
but listen now and trust in me:
you‘re so much more than what you see.

Thoughts do come, but surely go,
Emotions quickly ebb and flow,
Your body withers, time moves on
and one day it will all be gone.

But more than just a mortal man,
you are my child, you‘re everything.
You‘re meant to live eternally;
You are a God learning to be.“
