Description I generally don't mind redesigns when there is a clear reason for it (example: ED209 in the new Robocop was developed as a military machine, rather than for domestic policing, so it was made to look more like a tank) but when stuff is overhauled just for the sake of it, throwing logic out the window along the way, it becomes irritating. Like when something that is clearly meant to be a turbine splits down the middle.

I'm going to reinforce that last bit for people leaping to the design's defence: film is a VISUAL MEDIUM. If something LOOKS like a turbine, IT'S A F**KING TURBINE.

Don't forget that X-Wings would tear themselves apart in atmosphere of any planet with it lacking ANY kind of aerodynamic surfaces.....

The design was a shout-out to some of the early conceptual art by Ralph McQuarrie, whose X-wing designs had exactly that feature of the split intakes. And the turbines are behind the intake, and move with the wings.

Its not a turbine its an ion engine and that front part is a heat dispersion system

it's obviously not an aerial turbine because that wouldn't work in space. i dont know how it works but it could have just been a radiator cowling to disperse heat.

The film was the most shit thing I've seen in a long time anyway. I can't imagine how anyone could create a worse SW movie if they tried. Literally nothing in this film is good or even makes sense.

Star Wars never bothers with real world physics and engineering...Due to it being fantasy. (Please read the bolded part until your rabid fan-autism dies down.)

Actually, I think the X-Wing's 'Split Turbine' is actually an Air Intake shaped to look like half a Turbine, with the real engine being much smaller and slipped into the back. I mean, it's bloody obvious when LOOKING AT IT FROM FUCKING BEHIND!

I mean, SERIOUSLY! It's been that way since episode FOUR AT THE VERY START OF THE SERIES! HOW can you just say that they OVERLOOKED THAT PART!?

There dual turbines designed to work together when in flight mode, and separate when in attack mode. They are able to work separately without damaging the system, the only drawback is a loos in speed. I just bullsh** that entire argument but it makes as much sense as anything in this f***ed up world.

psilorder86 In reply to Winjin [2016-05-04 08:19:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, the outtake is round, the intake isn't Not sure why they would have a non-round intake when they have a round outtake. ramjets use passive intake so i suppose that could work...but they would probably still prefer to have intake and outtake be the same shape.

Maybe it's like the gullwing wing, that turned out completely useless in the terms that it was made for (it doesn't change flight characteristics to the better at all) but it looks cool AF?

Sci-Fi, remember? For all we do not know of Star Wars/Rebel technology, this is a folded dimension(a la Doctor Who/ The Tardis) Turbine design, the other half is in an alternative dimension conveniently folded into a non-spatial cubby-hole. With out loss in performance or believability, to boot!! Isn't engineering with imagination more fun???

memoryman15 [2016-01-25 10:53:24 +0000 UTC]

Who says it's a turbine? Its an intake by the looks on it, not sure what for since it is a spacefaring vessel, in that case it shouldn't have a need for an intake at all, making the X-wing a dumb design even before the force awakens. I still think it looks cool though.

Dunne In reply to Roccodog1 [2016-01-31 18:27:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes! IIRC correctly, they are based on the concept matte art for episode IV for the x-wing, which had a split intake shape.

DolphinSilverwolf [2015-12-20 10:21:22 +0000 UTC]

Another counterpoint (even if repeated)...The X-wing engine design places the actual turbines behind the midline of the wing.  The quad-fusial thrust assembly has four independent engines.  I haven't run the trailer in such detail as to criticize the CG but it is possible that the "turbine" on the leading edge is now a vane assembly which opens when the ship is in atmosphere and closes when it's in vacuum in order to enhance engine efficiency.

Yeah, I'm an engineering geek.

I mean the thing shouldn't even have worked in episode IV, but consider that it has (at least in the star wars RPG books) a repulsorlift system, which can at least provide a stabilizing and leveling system.  Star Wars also has artificial gravity, which if you simply program to point in another direction, can reduce G-stresses on the pilots.

Seriously.  "Long long ago in a galaxy far away."  We can accept a standing wave on a stick (lightsaber) but this is what gets your dander up?  I mean seriously the TIE fighters are ludicrous in atmosphere any way you slice it.  And I can accept some changes with time...Incom won big on the Rebellion and the New Republic, so they might change their designs.

I hope and pray they don't have a Jar-Jar Binks ludicrous element.

Don't fix what isn't broken, the original x-wings weren't changed in the comics, instead the added a few more letters. BUT! I'm not going to let this little oversight spoil the whole movie for me, and Disney isn't exactly renowned for following fact, science and the fiction that follows them.

Keep in mind that this is STAR WARS we are talking about, and Star Wars has FULL of impossible technologies right from the get-go!  Also, remember, this is taking place thirty-something years or so after the original trilogy, so who knows what advances in starfighter engine design have been made.

Even so, I still love this!
