Worst part of it all is, there exists metal alloys in the Star Wars universe that can resist lightsabers, which would obviously make for better cross guards than burning hot beam energy that could more easily burn the wielder than the person said wielder is trying to fight. Heck, the Star Wars Rebels cartoon introduced two lightsaber designs that have actual metal hand guards, one is the standard issue Imperial Inquisitor Lightsaber, while the other was custom made by Ezra Bridger, a mere Padawan. A PADAWAN has a more practical lightsaber than Kylo Ren...Now, I'm sure the movie will depict Ren doing all sorts of cool things with his silly lightsaber, but I'll be legitimately surprised, impressed even, if the film actually addresses how impractical his weapon actually is & provides a logical explanation for it that honestly works...Rule of cool can only go so far, & this thing stinks of rule of silly.Β
On another note, I actually like the new melee weapon we see a random stormtrooper using against a lightsaber, about time those guys finally toughened up & created something that can help them level the playing field lol.

Yes, but as we did see in the movie, lightsaber crossguards allow for offensive moves, and that actually makes a lot of since when you consider how often Jedi and Sith get incredibly close to each other when they clash blades. A little flick of the wrist, and saber to the face.
