Description The thrumming of the turbolift slowed to a gradual stop, and the doors hissed open revealing the busy bridge of the U.S.S. Avery. With the vessel barely out of drydock some consoles were still open with their inner workings on display as technicians worked frantically to tend to last minute finishes. Captain Cameron Dalkeiri stepped out and headed for the command platform confidently, with Lieutenant Jon Iron closely behind. The Lieutenant had shuttled Cameron up from Risa were he had been planning to enjoy the last of his shore leave. Being incommunicado in an isolated region, amazingly, still wasn’t enough to hide from his first officers incessant badgering.

“Captain on the bridge,” The Avery’s Caitian tactical officer, J-N, announced the CO’s arrival and stood firm.

“At ease Lieutenant,” Cameron patted J-N on the shoulder – a difficult task given the Caitian overbearing size. The man literally towered over his console. As Cameron sat in the center seat he noticed a disgruntled looking Commander Hannigan loom over him with her arms folded and wearing an accusatory glare.

“And where exactly have you been?” The question was obviously rhetorical in nature given Kalri had brought the Avery to Risa in search of its commanding officer.

“On holiday.” Cameron’s reply was terse as he continued to eye over status reports on his chair console.

“You do realize we have an emergency situation?” The exasperated commander all but threw her arms in the air in contempt. “The Atlantis responded to the distress call over six hours ago, we are meant to be en route.” Kalri knew full well the Avery’s role in the current crisis on Velend Haas was investigation only – the Atlantis and the Damocles had already begun providing vital relief, and the Avery was in no state right to provide medical or evacuation support.

Cameron stopped what he was doing and looked up sternly at Kalri.
“Waiting on you now.” He said dryly, folding his hands.

With a long drawn sigh and barely noticeable shake of her head Kalri Hannigan took the XO’s seat on Cameron left. She had grown accustomed to the command chair in the Captain’s absence and suddenly felt a little out of place back in her usual spot.

“Ensign Rio, plot a course of Velend Haas.” She ordered.

“Aye Commander, course plotted.” The Avery’s pink-haired Trill astrogator manipulated the navigational console and passed the appropriate course information to the helm. “Risa planetary control confirms we are clear to break orbit.”

“Take us out Jon,” Cameron commanded, with a wave of his hand. “Warp nine once we clear of Risa.”

A quick image I've had in mind for some time, and something to test that everything was working on my new system. I liked the interpretation of the warp speed visual in Abrahm's Star Trek (2009 - not Into Darkness, WTF was all that sparkly crap the enterprise leaves when it warps!?) and had been wanting to reproduce the effect in a still image myself. This was the result, using stills from the Internet as reference. It's not entirely accurate to the effect from the film, but I'm pleased with it.

The background effect was created in Photoshop using generated difference cloud textures and applying a radial blur, then layering them with different blending modes. The Avery was composited in with a couple more blur layers on top for good measure.

Very nice. A perfect demonstration that something that looks incredibly complicated doesn't have to be (if you know you way around various applications). Great lighting as well.
