Description While in Augusta this was all the street running I caught all day, and I caught this one on arrival but it was the only train moving in Augusta after 7:00AM

The reason why is because NS and CSX shut down operations for the holiday. It would just so happen that the one day I'm there and can catch all the street running I want is the day they'd do that.

It was strange not hearing a train horn in Augusta after this. Operations resumed at 7:00AM this morning.

I still think its bizzare seeing street running (here in the UK we dont really get that beyond trams now, there was only ever a few street sections and they've all been shut. Theres a new one, a narrow gauge steam railway in Wales, but it isnt open yet). Very nice picture, the composure of the shot is great, even if the idea of a massive freight train trundling down the street is a bit odd

Thats a shame. I found a pic of what was arguably the UK's most well-known street running section of railway, the Weymouth Harbour line [link] As you can see, a few issues with cars on the route Interestingly though officialy mothballed, the tracks are all still in place. And summing up the attitude to public transport over here, despite the Olympic Sailing taking place at Weymouth in 2012 and the government declaring they want this to be a 'green' olympics with much emphasis on public transport, this railway which runs right to a station at the heart of the Olympic venue... is about to be torn up, 2 years before the event and after having sat unusued and unobstructive for about 15 years. The reasoning is apparently that the property company redeveloping the sea front dont see a need for a railway line, and they want to reuse the old station, and the council says its dangerous to cyclists. Ridiculous.

I need to catch as much of it as possible to because they've been plotting to move the tracks for years

On the street running by me the trains throw the stop lights so they can cross the streets, but they still have to obey the red lights if it takes them awhile to change.

I have yet to catch a freight train street running, its always passenger trains.

Passanger trains is what this set-up was intended for.

I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the street-running concept. Definitely have to be on your toes on either side of the ball here.

Well making the shot isn't that hard because it is going slow but you do have the problem of possibly being blocked by motorist.

The main reason there was street running is because in the days of Southern they also used to run trolley cars down the street and that mint it was much easier for passenger trains and trolley cars to get to the old depot.

Now they don't have that and you have modern freight trains going down the middle of the street only and that makes it kind of a hazard which is why they want to relocate these tracks.

That's not uncommon in Augusta but may end in a couple of years.

There's a place near where my grandparents lived in southeast Kentucky that was similar to that ... but they've been stripmining the area for many years, so I haven't gone back, and don't know if it's still in operation. I'd rather remember it the way it was ...

You can look up almost any engine or location there and as long as there has been a photographer who has been there or seen that engine it should be there.

That is how Norfolk Southern has run through Augusta's 6th street for over 100 years.
