Description This is the 5th page of the MerDawn story I did for Joe Linsner of his character Dawn (originally published as the back up story in issue#3 Dawn Return of the Goddess in 2000). At this time he had never done Dawn as a mermaid, and I had always wanted to do her as one. We had known each other for several years beforehand via working for the same publisher, and I had expressed interest in doing Dawn as a mermaid...someday. So it came about that Joe wanted to see her done by me as a mermaid, and this is one page (pg5) of the 6 page story. There is a 7th page, which is like a page 0 to this story, which was published separately in his Dreams of Dawn issue for Wizard.

This treatment is what I will bring to the new Elf~Fin comic/Graphic Novel I'm working on now with Julie Ditrich.

Thanks. Now Joe Linsner has done his own mermaid Dawn as a poster image. Check it out on his Linsner.com website.

Are those scales on her tail skulls? That's an awesome idea!

Jozef-Szekeres In reply to WendyLynn [2010-06-30 02:30:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they are "Skull Scales". Thanks... I came up with it. It worked really well... and I literally thought of it just moments before I actually did it (on the first panel on the first page of the comic story).

I think it's a brilliant idea! That's the most hardcore mermaid ever!

hehehehe, thank you. It was a surprise moment of clarity to create the scull scales, it made so much sense for the character. The publisher was delighted, because this was new information he received on it when it was coloured. I decided not to tell him before he saw it.

It's awesome when stuff like that works out. Do you mind if I use the idea for an upcoming contest? I have to make a pirate mermaid, and I think that would look kickass! I'll credit you with the idea...

Jozef-Szekeres In reply to WendyLynn [2010-07-03 17:33:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

I think the use of Scull-scales might be original with this usage.

Sure you can use the concept, and I thank you in advance for your credit for my scull-scales creation.

You know what's funny, I woke up this morning and thought, "That skull-scales thing might be copyrighted." I haven't gone to art school, so pardon my ignorance. So okay yeah I was thinking that instead of the skulls, I could just use some other rad symbol thingamjig. And when I do I'm still going to credit you for the great inspiration. Sorry again for the ignorance!

Jozef-Szekeres In reply to WendyLynn [2010-09-30 19:27:16 +0000 UTC]

An idea is not copyrightable... only the usage of it.

As an example:

The famous photographers "Pierre et Gilles" made their human subjects glitter. Stephanie Meyer, the creator of Twilight has her vampires glitter in sunlight.

Obviously the Pierre et Gilles version came out first. It's possible that Stephanie Meyer saw these photographs and was inspired to give them a story usage, or it may be totally original in its inspiration.

The outcome is: Same effect, just different usages.... or reasons for "being".

So though they look similar, Stephanie Meyer's version would not be seen as a copyright infringement of the Pierre et Gilles treatment.

I adore the costume design on the angel (Darrien?). Stunning imagery. Who wrote the story?

Jozef-Szekeres In reply to allthegirlshateher [2009-07-06 17:14:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. the design of the costume is based on a rose...

The story was written by Robb Horan.

I dont know if I've commented on this before, but here we go anyway: Brilliant coloring, it's amazing how you can capture feelings that well. I can really feel my heart crack when they are separated from eachother. Makes me want to find about more about their story

Jozef-Szekeres In reply to Sosaurora [2007-12-22 21:06:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

Having animated for over a decade for Disney does get you connected with your characters emotions. So I bring that knowledge into my non Disney character work. The story is very sweet. I enjoyed giving it life.

Yeah, read about that, must have been fun experience to get into the big industry like that. Especially when you now know that you worked on one of the greatest Disneyfilms ever (who doesnt love TLM..)

Anyway, enough of my babbling. Wish you a Happy Christmas, and peaceful holidays.

That's the fantasy...

Like Romeo and Juliet, from two opposing families.

Her Skull effect on her tail I call SkullScales, and they were a fun revelation.

Page 5 is also my favorite page from the story, because of the full figure of Dawn and Darrian.

My best suggestion for waves is look at photographs, squint, then interpret.

This is gorgeous work. I'm pleasantly surprised that someone else can capture the particular beauty in Dawn that up until now I've only seen Joe do. The skulls as her scales are another pointed little homage to Dawn. I wish I had seen this in print! I only collect the tpb's, which was absent of this story.

I look forward to going through the rest of your gallery.

Thank you.

Joe said something similar to me about my depiction of Dawn, so that was nice to hear from him.

You can see this in print my purchasing from [link] Issue 3 of Dawn:Return of the Goddess. This story I did is the back up to the feature story. It may yet be collected in the future.

What medium is that? acrylic?

that art must have taken some time. what sort of schedule do they have you on?

I'm not terribly familiar with the concept but good work, though...
