Are those scales on her tail skulls? That's an awesome idea!

Yes, they are "Skull Scales". Thanks... I came up with it. It worked really well... and I literally thought of it just moments before I actually did it (on the first panel on the first page of the comic story).

hehehehe, thank you. It was a surprise moment of clarity to create the scull scales, it made so much sense for the character. The publisher was delighted, because this was new information he received on it when it was coloured. I decided not to tell him before he saw it.

It's awesome when stuff like that works out. Do you mind if I use the idea for an upcoming contest? I have to make a pirate mermaid, and I think that would look kickass! I'll credit you with the idea...

Thanks.
I think the use of Scull-scales might be original with this usage.
Sure you can use the concept, and I thank you in advance for your credit for my scull-scales creation.

An idea is not copyrightable... only the usage of it.
As an example:
The famous photographers "Pierre et Gilles" made their human subjects glitter. Stephanie Meyer, the creator of Twilight has her vampires glitter in sunlight.
Obviously the Pierre et Gilles version came out first. It's possible that Stephanie Meyer saw these photographs and was inspired to give them a story usage, or it may be totally original in its inspiration.
The outcome is: Same effect, just different usages.... or reasons for "being".
So though they look similar, Stephanie Meyer's version would not be seen as a copyright infringement of the Pierre et Gilles treatment.

I adore the costume design on the angel (Darrien?). Stunning imagery. Who wrote the story?

Thank you.
Having animated for over a decade for Disney does get you connected with your characters emotions. So I bring that knowledge into my non Disney character work. The story is very sweet. I enjoyed giving it life.

That's the fantasy...
Like Romeo and Juliet, from two opposing families.
Her Skull effect on her tail I call SkullScales, and they were a fun revelation.

Page 5 is also my favorite page from the story, because of the full figure of Dawn and Darrian.
My best suggestion for waves is look at photographs, squint, then interpret.

This is gorgeous work. I'm pleasantly surprised that someone else can capture the particular beauty in Dawn that up until now I've only seen Joe do. The skulls as her scales are another pointed little homage to Dawn. I wish I had seen this in print! I only collect the tpb's, which was absent of this story.
I look forward to going through the rest of your gallery.

Thank you.
Joe said something similar to me about my depiction of Dawn, so that was nice to hear from him.
You can see this in print my purchasing from [link] Issue 3 of Dawn:Return of the Goddess. This story I did is the back up to the feature story. It may yet be collected in the future.

I know ten people have said it already, but I have never EVER seen skull scales, or any other kind of non-scaly scales before. Very very original!

I saw it wrong.. it was a part of the handpalm. It was just the way I looked at it.
By the way, I find it a beautiful and unique drawing.

What medium is that? acrylic?
that art must have taken some time. what sort of schedule do they have you on?
I'm not terribly familiar with the concept but good work, though...
