Description Originally painted in 1993, This was the first issue cover for the Original WaveDancers comic series. The art features Tilaweed, the mascot for the series. With this painting I learnt what treatment I wanted for the series. The new treatment will be without the heavy character linework. Though Tilaweed was a secondary character in this original WaveDancers series, she was well loved by her creators and fans alike and will feature as a major player in the new series of Elf-Fin that Julie Ditrich and I are currently working on.

aww...BUT... it seems that you can readily find all six issues on eBay (at varying prices). I hope you get a chance to read it.

Jozef-Szekeres In reply to paady [2007-06-09 11:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

The "ink" work was just watered down Acrylics applied with a nib. The only actual pen work was the eyelashes. The underdrawing is in Pencil.

I've always loved this original series, and now I'm dying to read the new one about Tilaweed and the others! I own the original comics and thought it a true shame that they discontinued them! The artwork is the best. . . beautiful, delicate and ferocious all at the same time -- just like the sea!

Thank you.

The new story is taking shape, it's nice to work with these characters again. So much has happened since the last time I worked with these characters, so it is a very fresh take.

Finally the cover without that horrible zilver/reflecting thing over it.... Loved the image , absolutely hated that foil cover thing...also...with age it rips easier, which the others don't...

Now we can finally see how huge the wave is....

(although i preffered one of the other covers that were showed in the issue...)

Also... do you have more of those statuetes you made of 'the true crown'?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jozef-Szekeres In reply to Interjected-Hiccup [2007-02-12 13:07:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks ever so much. I hated the silver/reflecting thing over the artwork, it did not enhance the artwork, or the cover design or presentation really, just made it gaudy. I remember Richard Pini saying that he'd put it on 'cause it was "in" and everyone was doing it. I think this was their first foil covered comic.

Yes the wave is huge. I loved the other variant with Tilaweed twisting above the wave. I've seen lots of fan art versions of it that have been colored.

No more statues of the True Crown, but is did start one on Tilaweed (while the comic was in production and stopped once we were put on hiatus by Richard Pini because we did not hand over the reversion rights to the Wavedancers that were legally ours in our contract ) that has unfortunately crumbled away, but I still have the photos...I should post them here.

Once Elf-fin is up and running, you can be sure that I'll explore sculpture again with Tilaweed and the other characters.

Interjected-Hiccup In reply to Jozef-Szekeres [2007-02-12 15:00:05 +0000 UTC]

I really found it horrible.. it didn't do a thing for the cover... and if it did it was distracting... And they never did one again

And for it being 'in'?.. If i was in the same position i wouldn't do it just for that...Heck...i wouldn't even do it at all..

But that's me i guess..

Hee! That's funny, cause the twisting one is the one i would've picked too

And yes, if you would, i'd love to see it... and when they come available (the ones you'll make when Elf~fin starts) Be sure to write me down for one of Tilaweed and Raenafel (sp?) and the father of Barmek (forgot his name)

Thank you. Re-looking and slightly retooling both these artworks was very healing for me. I'm very happy to present them here for you and other fans of the original release, and of course for those that have seen it here for the very first time. Julie and I are having a wonderful time working on the new story staring Tilaweed and Hyfus. Hopefully this new work will have paintings that will become your new favorites of Tilaweed.

This cover was the reason I brought Wavdancers in the first place. It's an honour to see the original print from the original artist. I love Elfquest & I love Merfolk so when I saw that a new series made with both elements I was overjoyed.

It's great to share it. The Mer-elf idea was great to originate and see published. At the time I also loved ElfQuest and Mermaids.

I feel sorry that the made some silvery frame around it and added letters and stuff on the front.

but it's still nice that I can just go to my bookcase and drool over the picture there

Thank you. I had visions of seeing this in a gallery section of the hard cover Graphic Novel of the first series. But it was not meant to be. It's nice to share it here without the frame and letters, and nice to visit the comic on the bookcase.

The one thing I have terrible trouble with is drawing water. I can't draw it. I can’t shade it. You can't position falling water or stop a waterfall in order to draw it. My waves end up looking like sea-blue grass. Water is evil for me and my pencil. You have beautiful illustrations. I'd like to know more about this piece.

Nice... Heh, I was refering to the comment glitch. I just wanted to know what you had to say about this picture. Thats all I was asking! Thanks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jozef-Szekeres In reply to TrialandMuchError [2007-01-27 17:05:50 +0000 UTC]

Lol, cool. The glitch was a moment in dA that didn't allow for messages to come through, this was when they upgraded their systems. It's now corrected, but those messages sent at that time were lost for good.

As to the picture it was the Cover to WaveDancers Issue 1. There is still a lot of love here that I have for Tilaweed the character in the painting, so much so that Julie and I (my co-creator) have decided to further her story with Hyfus (on the Cover of WaveDancers #2). This art advertised the coming of the WaveDancers series, and it created quite a buzz at the time. A very nice thing to experience for my first American released work.

Why do you have no comments on this. Your waves are AMAZING!!! The sea color and the bubbles and foam are perfect in my eyes. You did a great job. Your mermaid is a bit thin, but her body is still beautiful! Wonderful work!
