Tilaweed.forCat.SzekeresThis illustration of Tilaweed was created as a personal thank you to Cat Kouns Born: A significant staff member (and constant friend) at Warp Graphics while WaveDancers was in production. (Thank you Cat, for the high rez digital files of this artwork for my archive gallery). It's rare that I do artwork specifically as gifts.
WaveDancers was published during 1993 - 1994, so this is from that same time, but has never seen print publication. It's interesting to me how elongated the design of Tilaweed became. She was the poster girl of the series.
I've updated the look of Tilaweed for the new Elf-fin series Julie Ditrich and I are currently working on. Still long and lithe, but a touch more toned.

That tail would have some power behind it, especially with those huge fins. One good swish of that with some forward propelled motion would thrust her up with no problems.

Tilaweed is quite different here then her current portrayal. This Tilaweed done near the end of the WaveDancers series, was probably the most extreme in the elongated treatment.
Cat is totally deserving of this artwork. She was such a wonderful support during production of WaveDancers, and during the experience had become a friend. I feel lucky that I could do this for her.

For that time, her skinny-ness was good, though I always thought she was a bit too skinny. I like her better now, with some 'meat on her bones'. Oh, and I finally decided to add you to my watch. Most of the people I watch have started to post less and less, so I can manage all the uploads nowadays XP

I feel that the early tilaweed was strongly influenced by the ElfQuest look of the "High Ones" as she was closely related in age to them, but by the time I got to this illustration (at the end of the series) the elongated look took on a life of its own.
When redesigning the characters that were once the WaveDancers for the new Elf-fin series, I was very conscious to remove all that I deemed "ElfQuest design" aspects. So though they are still elves, they are now MY elves entirely... with my own aesthetic design of what elves should be.

I have the owner of the original artwork Cat Kouns Born to thank for that. When I gave this artwork to her as a gift, All I had of it was a dodgy color photocopy (for really ... that was all you could get at the time). Cat kindly sent me two scans at 600DPI via online "YouSentIt" from her A4 scanner (the original is A3 in size), so I then stitched the two parts together to make it one whole digital file.
I'm still awaiting scans of several works I'd given as gifts to both Robb Horan and Erik Larsen.

This Tilaweed predates the "Winx", but I can see where there's a similar attraction the "Winx" and Tilaweed share.
