Here we have Tentus and the mischievous No-Fin. Tentus first saw publication as one of the Original WaveDancers in 1993-94, and No-Fin originally appeared as No-Wing. This newer artwork was done in 2001 as part of a pitch to see Tentus, No-Fin, Tilaweed, Hyfus and Illora in a new children's book called "The Swimming Lesson". We had several local publishers interested, but then they wanted to change the story and art direction/design so dramatically it would no longer be the same story, nor would the characters look like themselves anymore (one publisher insisted the characters would have to have "button" eyes, as there was apparently too much to read in the expression of the eyes in the original design...So we progressed as much as possible with the Australian publishers, and then it was over for a time.
Julie and I have retooled the whole story and put focus on Hyfus and Tilaweed as the lead characters, and we decided that the comics medium is best suited to realizing our vision of story and artistic direction. Tentus and No-Fin are also major players in this new work.
This particular work is a detail of one very wide painting that includes "The Swimming Lesson" with Tilaweed Illora and Hyfus.

this is so beautiful. It is weird, but I liked tentus lots n the WD stories, 'cause there's so rare to see old characters that play important parts in a story, specially is great to see he is elderly but well loved by those around him, and No-Fin, sounds more proper! We knew it had no wings, but since they all got fins and not that little preserver, No-fin suited!

in this new work we are doing now. Tentus will play a larger role then he did in the original WaveDancers. I have always loved the character, and he will have his moments...

So, in the stories, is No-Fin the underwater version of the Preservers? I think you might also wnt to consider self-publishing for a book with this calibre of artwork. I think publishing companies are the worst thing to happen to children's books since I don't know when. As usual they underestimate the intelligence of our kids, and are crushing their imaginations. Art isn;t just being murdered inthe schools...book publishers are doing their fair share. I have two kids, a girl who will be 9 on January 1st,a nd my son will be 3 on November 25th. I am always lookingofr new and creative books with beautiful artwork. I don't have much luck, and I usually have to look very hard. Most of the stuff available right now is the same run-of-the-mill drivel we've been seeing for over a decade now. I am telling you, that of you guys decide to self publish, you've sold at 5 books in this household alone already!

Though we have No-Wing who we own from the experience of creating the WaveDancers. So we had to create an existence and reason for being for him and our other characters from the Original WaveDancers in the new world we created for our characters.
It is unlikely that we will pursue this story as a children's book at this late stage, but the prequel story of Tilaweed and Hyfus, which also features Tentus and No-Fin will be a comic/graphic novel. Julie and I are currently working on it.

Thank you. Tentus...the old merman (and mer-elf) is a special and dear character from the Old WaveDancers that will feature in this new work that Julie and I are now doing. I'm especially glad to be working with this character again.

Not too sure who the "she" is that you are referring to, but (as per the contract with Warp Graphics) Julie and I own the characters and the story of the Original WaveDancers.
Contrary to our contract with Warp Graphics, Warp made a public claim of ownership of the Original WaveDancer characters before the characters were meant to be returned to us one year after the last issue saw print (which was in 1994). It then took us 5 years in legal battle to recover what was legally ours anyway. So in the end of all that, we got our characters back with all links to ElfQuest severed from the project.
So we had characters without a stage to perform. So a new world and its particular uniqueness had to be created from scratch for these players to tell their new story. This took some time to come about, and once the world was solidified, we could create the stories for these characters. However, the characters fit differently in this new world, though we have kept familial ties with most of the characters where they appear in the story, some of their relationships have changed.
It was a huge task to reinvent these characters from the ground up, yet keeping that something special that was worth fighting for for all those years.
We did look at bringing the characters out in a children's book, but found that there would be too much editorial interference to what we wanted to create, so we abandoned that avenue (for the time being). However, we had further detailed our would and the characters in it and saw where we might re-enter the story for a comic mini-series/graphic novel, which would be of a radically different tone to the children's book.
What I feel Julie and I have accomplished is characters that are richly conceived with a deep, sometimes dark, yet fun and touching story that will hopefully be our best writing work, and my best painted sequential artwork to date.

I'm still confused with what characters are yours and what characters are Warps especially after the release of The Discovery. -.- Copyrights and court stuffs are so frustrating. This is why I don't even do fanart.
But I wish you and Julie much luck in your new project. I actually recognized this as a WaveDancer which is why I clicked on it. It really is a beautiful pic.

The characters that you saw in the original WaveDancers are owned by Julie and me. Excluding the characters from the original ElfQuest story like Winnowill et el that appeared in the story, they belong to Warp. We make it very clear on our website, unfortunately Warp are not as clear on this subject on their website, which is a pity, for legally they should be.

Yes, color is everywhere, it's an interesting exercise to decide what colors go where and how intense to make it. It ended up that the warmer colored area is softer in color then the blue water section which is full strength with color.

Thank you. The detail was fun to do, though it did take extra time to do that stuff. Not set up many prints yet, but I own all the copyrights of my mermaid art, so I should pursue setting that up. thank you for your interest in that.
