One of the cool things about art is letting ones imagination go outside the box.

It is a lot of fun.

Think is has kind of an Alice/wonderland feel, in the future I want to do something like that.

Thank you again.

Yeah surrealism is great for visual art, it can be tricky to get right but when it is

This is very pretty Joe......i see a tree of life that belongs to the Vikings and their holistic way of life. The feeling that a flood is coming and will wash away all the toadstools and mushrooms but will ensure the safety of the little people within the trees loving embrace.
At first i thought all the fungi were shiny and like they had been given a coat of Mod Podge. BUT then i realised they are lit from within. I so want to be small enough to fit inside and visit a while........only that was Alices downfall.
I see one tree but i imagine a whole forest of trees holding each individual habitat safe and secure. I cant see anyone but i know they are there.
The light inside the trees arms seems brighter than the outer sky. It is misty and i think its early morning........

I like the colours, the shades and shadows used. The tree without leaf offers a cold reality just like it is here. I can imagine its nowhere near as cold for you
I love the bright reds and oranges of the fungi group below. You have even put in tiny lights which make all the difference when viewing.
Ive never used gimp but have Photoscape thats free and ipiccy which has some good effects. That too is free . I bought an expensive photoshop 10 and couldnt use it.......too much for me.
Where did you get your inspiration from for this ???

Thank you so much for the great comment, hmmm, I never thought of Alice, but I see it now.

The fungi took forever to do, but it was the most enjoyable part to paint.

As far as the inspiration there was none, I just started painting and this happened.

That happens in the majority of my work, instead of starting with a preconceived idea I just let it go

where ever it will flow.

I often start with a place, piece of architecture, sculpture or any ordinary photo of non human denomination - i feel a picture coming on for later and make notes out in the field. Then i get home and download my pics only to find a different story emerges.. ....is it to stay REAL or become a crazy odd piece i can call my own .
So in a way im like you....i get to the computer stage open a picture- any one will do and i begin.........I feel like Leonardo da Vinci about to create a new machine for living. Only my image will not be a masterpiece for the world to revere.

It is such a buzz when it goes right.

You are creating right from blank page and i could never do that.......your so clever - Mandyx

I can’t say I have ever felt like Leonardo da Vinci lol but it is great when you like the outcome.

Clever…hardly, just different.

There is so much great creativity on this site. I think its awesome when people create art that makes the viewer stop and say wow.

This is a really nice idea and a cool painting, however, the somewhat values and the lack of atmospheric light is what I believe it lacks. What I'm trying to say is that the further something is (like the trees), the more de-saturated it needs to be for it to look realistic and to give that sense of 3D on a 2D canvas.

I suggest watching this video . It helped me a lot with my paintings once I learned about this.

Values are something I always struggle with, something I have been trying to concentrate on more.

Think I have a fear of going to light or dark because it may look good on my laptop and not on another pc.

That is a very informative video, thanks.

I have the same problem. I always lose contrast and end up having to use some layer modes/styles to increase the contrast. It's really a pain but hopefully we will both be able to easily paint values without having to worry about messing up.
