Description Quick lil comparison I did between kid Snape in the books and in the movies. Obviously I didn't expect the movies to quite capture the full depth of Snape's character... but they portrayed him as a total angel, not the kid who made Lily cry like 6 times, haha. Honestly, if I hadn't read the books, I'd be wondering how Lily ended up with James. That kid Snape was totally adorable

Thanks to Alan Rickman's (inaccurate, IMO)Β portrayal of him, Snape was martyred. He's a lot worse in the books. For example, after Snape's Worst Memory in the movies, he says to Harry, very quietly, "Get...out." But in the books he screams and throws stuff at him. Or like at the end of POA where they cut out the scene where Snape just knows Harry helped Sirius escape.

Yep Snivellus was always a racist douche. No wonder Petunia hated magic. She had Snivellus Snape attacking her with it and blowing it off as if it was nothing and her witch sister still being friends with the one who attacked her. I would be angry too.

At that point in time, Lily and Petunia were friends. Petunia was just a tween who had never abused/neglected a child and was understandably jealous of her younger sister. Whether or not she deserved it later on, she didn't deserve it then.

Yep. Agree. Although you have to say, about characters the movies messed a lot of things up. One more reason to prefer the books over the movies. And of course the "Have a biscuit"- line. Aaaaand pyjama parties with fakeMoody, Snape, Harry and Filch. Aaaaaaaaand.....

Hm, I agree with SpideyLegend... It seems to be a case of accidental magic, Harry does that all the time...

Harry's accidental magic has never harmed anyone, however (except Aunt Marge, but she deserved a lot worse). It mostly serves to protect him. Snape used his to harm. Whether he intended to or not, it shows that he subconsciously had a desire to hurt her.

To be honest, Snape didn't do it on purpose. He was surprised about waht happen, meaning it was probably a case of accidental magic.

I agree! I'm writing a fan fiction story about what it would be like if Neville was the "chosen one" instead of Harry, and I think that if Jily had lived, it would have been a complicated and ultimately unhappy relationship that would end in divorce when Harry was older.

I always thought the branch incident was one of those instances of accidental magic, since there wasn't really any indication that Severus had done it on purpose other than Lily's accusation. But then young Lily really loved and admired her sister, it would make sense for her character to take Petunia's side or act protective of her no matter what. Harry was known to do magic accidentally, too after all, whenever he got riled up enough, even when he was supposedly old enough to know better (blowing up Aunt Marge for one). I'm sure Harry had been imagining all sorts of horrible things to happen to his aunt at the time, but didn't expect anything to actually happen.

As for the movie, well, unfortunately, I think Rowling kind of screwed herself on that by not revealing more info to the directors from the start. So they were basically as clueless as the readers were about Snape. He was portrayed very one-dimensional in the first three books, so no one thought much about cutting out or shortening Snape's scenes in favor of the main story. Once that ball started rolling, it just continued into the more important books. ("Snape's Worse Memory" being a glaring example; that scene was horribly butchered and far too short; then two books later we later find out it is a crucial scene). By the time Deathly Hallows came out there wasn't much material left to work with for the big reveal. It would have been an extreme mood whiplash to compare an angry somewhat sadistic kid with the much calmer adult Snape that Rickman portrayed in the last couple of movies. For a more book faithful scene to have worked, the previous movies would have needed to show just how cruel and unfair adult Snape could be from the very beginning. They never did that, and just made him a snarky and somewhat short-tempered disciplinarian.

I think the movies were so focused on the trio that anything not about them was pushed to second seat. I love the movies a lot but man they fucked some shit up. Way too much trio in the movies honesty. You know you have too much trio when in HBP the HBP only shows up for maybe 15 min all together in the movies.

I still don't get why they couldn't digitally re color Lily/Harry's eyes.

It is odd how it is Snape who makes Lily cry but she got with James. Were as Ron made Hermione cry and she married him.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

thesage2600 In reply to HorseGuardian [2012-11-02 07:12:57 +0000 UTC]

...Well, Snape made Lily cry by doing bad (and by time they were in school, cruel) things. Ron's moments were not only scattered with a lot of redeeming time but most were just him bein insensitive (although Hermione got what she deserved to a degree in Half-Blood Prince).

Plus Snape got worse the older they got and Ron got better (people do lay onto Ron a bit much, but I think people just can't understand how or why he could be jealous of Harry since we see the books from Harry's point of view since it would look a bit different from Ron's perspective).

I mean look at it from this perspective about the big arguments:

Book 1: Halloween but then he came to save to her with Harry so that blew the whole thing over.

Book 2: No argument other than Ron trying to tell her that Lockhart was a phony, Ron was right.

Book 3: Hermione buys a cat that is chasing and trying to seemingly eat her best friends pet, is heavily stressed, and decides she'll just go behind her best friend's back instead of consulting them first. All in all, Hermione was being stupid that year and she really should have been chastised for it but the whole thing more or less blew over and Hermione realized she put on too much.

Book 4: The Yule Ball, totally Ron's fault and he deserves what he got. Still, they got over it quick enough thanks to more important things going on with Harry thus in fact showing Hermione that Ron learned from his bout of jealousy with Harry not to let it get in the way of his feelings.

Book 5: No argument and they in fact spent more time together than with Harry...though we don't get to see it.

Book 6: That fight was a myriad of things: 1) Ginny basically telling Ron to get an easy girlfriend, 2) Ginny basically reigniting Ron's jealousy of Krum by mentioning him kissing Hermione, 3) Ron being jealous and grumpy, 4) Hermione not being supportive, 5) Hermione talking like she doesn't believe in him to prove a point, 6) Lavender being extremely supportive of him that year so far (such as saying good luck to Ron when Hermione didn't). Overall the blame settled on Ron, Hermione and Ginny for what happened...but of course the brutality of war showed how childish and petty they were being so Ron and Hermione got over it.

Book 7: All three of the trio were cranky and mean in that tent (though Ron was the worst with lack of food but even Hermione is mentioned to be downright unpleasant as well), but Ron is effected worse by the locket due to all of his insecurities so he was more unpleasant. The fight was basically caused by being under the influence and he didn't come back immediately to them because he ended up captured in an enemy camp until Harry and Hermione left. Had he not, he probably would have returned a couple of minutes later.

Plus after facing the locket, Ron moved on from his problems thus leaving only the good man instead. I can say that had Harry, Ron and Hermione been through so much they probably wouldn't have gotten together though since most of Ron's good points probably wouldn't have been shown off as well. Ron and Hermione have what I like to call a "Fire forged love." As in, it's through their harships that they were able to see the person that they really were.

I think Lily and James had a degree of that too, while unfortunately, the more hardships Severus was put through the more it showed how horrible a person he was. Like when push came to shove, Snape would rather hide away with his Slytherin friends than step into save a bunch of innocent Muggleborns (I can see this happening simply because he would have let James and Harry die if Lily lived and he tried to write off dark magic on a girl that his friend did).
