I smell bath water when I see this one. More specifically, I smell a brand locally called, "Algemarin", which smells something like seaweed at low tide by the ocean.

It is a testament to your skill that my first impression is of a smell, instead of a sight.

Lovely work, my friend. I have nothing to suggest for changes - only my impressions as they wash over me.

Best,
Russell

this looking great !
you have rendered her hair superb, like the manner in which you handled all the delicate strands, also her skin tones are spot on.
I always like images with a neutral background like this as it helps centralize the figure as the main subject and focal point.

Thank you for saying so

I agree completly with the netural background statement. Its for similar reasons I don't do clothed figures, I really think as simple as possible is the way to go.

It’s a beautiful drawing with wonderful details. I like the composition with the space on the right that she is looking at.
The blue in the background enhances her skin tone by its contrast and brings out her blue eye color at the same time.
Very nice!

thank you for your feedback, I very rarely use blue, and I chose to do it for the exact reasons you mentioned, so I'm glad it worked to someone else's eye as well

Great job on the detailed hair and the skin tone. You've really got the colors down. They always look perfect. I like the way she's holding her hair up and looking to the side. Really great work.

thanks. I am gradually refining my use of colour, I think the whole working on coloured ground is really effective if doen right, still experimenting there, but yeah tis working so far

Dyun In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-04-06 17:17:00 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. It should be comforting for you to know that so far I haven't seen anyone paint/draw skin-tones as perfectly as you,.... not traditionally anyway. It's a little easier digitaly when you can sample the colors from photographs. To judge just by looking and mixing is far more difficult.

Jumprabbit In reply to Dyun [2007-04-07 08:40:44 +0000 UTC]

well thanks for saying so, my skind tone deffinatly something I've worked on heaps, I'm amazed I can get it out of pastels when you can't quite mix colours the way you do with oils

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dyun In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-04-07 19:24:09 +0000 UTC]

No problem. I guess you just have to know how to use the pastels softly and carefully. If you work with them enough you learn.

Not so bad...I'm making plans to get much much better at pastels, working bigger, using layers, that sort of thing. Getting bogged down on my current oil, I'm jsut not inspired with it..allthough its nearly done and looks good so I guess I'm just being stupid there...

jenepooh In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-04-18 01:22:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh I completely understand about wondering if something is done, or should I do this, or that to it. We stand there looking helpless because we are never sure if we will truly love it and/or whether people will take kindly to it ect. I understand how that is honey.... but with your talent, I doubt why you would doubt yourself so much.... I can't wait to see it. As for the pastels? Ha, I'm still in the what-in-the-world-did-I-just-make phase of pastel learning lol..... *shrugs* I'll figure it out someday lol... Great to talk to you.

Beautiful! I'm always afraid to spray fixitive on my pastel works, because kills the colors. Do you avoid doing this also or do you have certain technique?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jumprabbit In reply to ToyMakerPo [2007-04-07 08:25:12 +0000 UTC]

I avoid spraying them because it kills the colours. If you want to work building up layers with your dark tones under you can spray them, but you if you use fixative at the end it all goes pear shaped. Just have to try and get them behind glasse asap.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ToyMakerPo In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-04-10 16:47:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm just asking various pateslists this question. I thought maybe someone knows a way to preserve their pastel works without having that problem. All the answers have been the same. I don't know if you have heard this but Degas had a recipe for fixing his work without killing the colors, but it's been lost.

Jumprabbit In reply to ToyMakerPo [2007-04-12 04:18:50 +0000 UTC]

No I hadn't heard that...I kill for the recipe I tell you now..Same as the van Eyke medium for oil painting...also lost

I'm starting to get more into the idea of them. Thinking about actaully like, reserching how they are used and stuff, and working on a bigger scale, see if I can really push it a bit further.

thanks for the feedback, I thought that as well, however I'm pretty sure its mostly due to a cooler colour for the background, as my general skin tone is mostly unchanged
