Description Possibly the only good thing about a long distance relationship, is it gives you time to reflect on one another. During a period of 40 days apart, I asked her to send me photos for a work, which she went to great trouble to take. She sent me a disk of about 40 shots, of which I choose this, mostly because I felt it showed far more of her true personality. Karen comes across as a very friendly charactor, even a bit of a push over, which often disguises the very experienced, strong woman that lies under. She is NOT a little girl, and I've tried here to show the strength of a woman in her prime, even is she is a big brat really
I gave it to her as a gift for valentines day, and she promptly refused to except it without paying me (probably because she new my phone had been cut off at the time). hehe
I worked very hard on this, and for a lot of reasons I'm emotionally attached to it. She loves it, so what you all think is kinda beside the point.

one of my favorites in your gallery... probably because of the emotion, and the interesting style... i like ur use of contrast and perspective alot. good work all around... i like it when u focus up on a person face... it gives them a more contronting persona.

I really love the mood you're conveying with this piece. It's very strong and dark yet vulnerable and gentle. So beautiful.
And while we work in different styles, I appreciate yours, and the depth you convey in your work is really precious.

Oh I know how it is....with all the comments and replies to be made, It's a decision as to whether you take it easy and browse through other people's galleries- which can be an evil time-zapper, or get to work on pushing your own work!

Take your time- I'll be around....

By the way I see you're in Pomona- I love the little theatre there. I also lived here for a few weeks a few years ago up in the hills. Very pretty

Being a fine artist & portrait artist I do understand and can relate to the amount of time and ..."Nashing of teeth' as you put it. I to have done many redos on several paintings. Something just not right about a certain area. In this painting...i redid the face serveral times - [link]

I like the loosness of your brush work. One area I need to work on. I get too tight and tend to overwork areas. Well done on this portrait. You can feel your energy and care for this individual at the time. Sometimes I compare painting and portrait or nude as an intimate experience. I imagine myself being right there with the model, If I'm working from a photo, and feeling my hand glide across her skin, feeling the warrmth, the texture, teh softness and tenderness of each curve. Then, I try tp translate all those emotions and feelings onto the canvas...it can be highly erotic at times.

I see that you put alot of yourself in your work also. Keep up teh great work. I look forward to seeing more.

Thanks you have no idea how hard that was...much wailing and nashing of teeth...and 3 major redos of the left eye...but i think it worked in the end..

This is simply amazing, the painting is beautiful. The colours are so warm and well-matched to skin and the shadows perfect! It's really expressive too - I think it gives off a lot of emotion.

This is absoutely wonderful. I also really love your story behind it. I think portraits are called such that they accurately portray someone's perosonality or at least an aspect of it. I think its great that you could do something like this for her. I too am in a long distance relationship, and I think that this is such a wonderful way of showing your love for her. I can't say anything but cheesy stuff anymore.... I like it a lot.

That's really beautiful. From my stance as a photographer, you've captured the light fantastically. It looks much like the type that comes around 5:30, through a window, very golden and soft. I'm throughly impressed by the rendering of her face, too. Such an extreme close-up at an unusual angle is difficult to treat so sensitively, and achieve such a great result. Everything is just so subtle and natural looking in this, it's wonderful. I especially like how you've not included a background, and have allowed some of the highlights to be blown out, breaking up any sort of hard edge. It adds to the feeling of softness overall.
I can see your attachment to this person and this piece through your care in its making.

Thank you. I do really appreciate that, you've picked up on pretty much everything I was trying to do, which a huge number of people seem to have have missed.
Means a lot that someone else gets it, as it was deffiantly the best I could do at the time
Cheers

Oil on canvas. I used a hand mixed brown, made from mixing red and yellow to get orange, and adding blue, as well as indian yellow, black and white.

that help?

Jumprabbit In reply to GeeWiz [2005-04-30 15:02:04 +0000 UTC]

Just for the record, my paintings are all one layer, often pretty thin paint. I put down my darks (the hand mixed brown) then work the white, and if I feel like it indian yellow over the top and mix the tone on the canvas.

though that might help
