PERSONALITY // "I'll try my hardest."
Personality: [+Friendly | +Loving | +Loyal | +Sympathetic | =Sensitive | =Optimist | -Trusting | -No boundaries | -Not bright | -Pushover]
From first glance, Eli's base personality is written all over his face. All smiles, hearty laughs, and knock-the-wind-outta-you pats on the back, the Clefable is quite the friendly fellow. He has no problem warming up quickly to strangers, even if they give him the cold shoulder. This can result in fast friendships or a broken heart on Eli's part depending on the target of Eli's affection. Unfortunately for more standoffish folks, Eli has little to no concept of personal space, which can result in unwanted hugs and arms slung across shoulders. He never means to hurt anyone's feelings or scare them with these displays of affection, and it breaks his heart when he does. He's a sensitive fellow at heart and hurtful statements towards him turn Eli into a frowning, teary-eyed, slumped shoulders version of himself. Thankfully this doesn't last long due to his endless optimism. Maybe they're having a bad day and didn't mean to call him a clingy idiot. That must be it! Unfortunately, it doesn't help that he's gifted with more brawn than brains. A lot of subtlety, sarcasm, and complex plans go right over Eli's head.
Eli's quick trust comes with quick loyalty. The deeper someone's friendship is with him, the more loyal he gets. He'd do anything to make his friends happy. Unfortunately, many more dubious folks like to take advantage of his trust and manipulate the poor fellow. Eli is also quite a pushover, preferring to make people happy over all else. He often puts the needs of others above his own, resulting in him losing sleep, blood, or even money. He just can't say no to a sad face. Thankfully, this is balanced out by his loving and sympathetic nature. It can be hard sometimes for others to take advantage of a guy who's willing to offer a stranger a shoulder to cry on and a warm hug. He really gives his all for others.

Home Town: Emerald Port
History:
(TW: Family death.)
Elijah Stephan Brightlocke was born to the sassy, stubborn Clefable Jane Brightlocke and the jolly, rash Krookodile Ulysses "Seas" Brightlocke in the heat of the Emerald Island summer. It was difficult for the stay at home wife and her merchant ship deckhand husband to have the little Clefairy in the first place, and everyone was worried the sickly little premature baby wasn't going to survive his first week. But Eli pulled through and ended up a rambunctious, cheerful kid. In his childhood years, he would often get into trouble because of the curiosity all children have and his unfortunate lack of common sense. The boy just couldn't put two and two together, not unlike his poppa. He ran his mother a bit ragged, coming home with scrapes and bruises from climbing a tree after a stray Litten (and consequently falling out of it) or covered in mud from his recent mud castle building contest with himself. Jane often got a little too snippy with the child as a result, since despite his best efforts he rarely kept to her advice to stay out of trouble. But he wasn't a bad kid, just overenthusiastic when it came to adventuring, so her scoldings would often end in long sighs and gentle pats on the head.
Eli's poppa was often out at sea due to his job, resulting in his momma doing most of the child raising. But when Seas was home, he spent all his free time with his family. Eli loved his poppa to pieces, and greatly admired the Krookodile. He would imitate his father's broad, hands-on-his-hips stance and hearty laugh, much to his momma and poppa's amusement. Seas loved his son to pieces and would spoil the child a bit more than his wife liked whenever he was home. She gave him a bit of lip for it, but would still let it slide. It was hard for her to fuss too serious at the two boys who she loved so much, especially when they gave her such hurt expressions when she scolded them.
When Eli entered elementary school, his momma quickly found that the heartily built Clefairy inherited his poppa's learning disabilities. He struggled with memorizing facts, dates, and the like, as well as math. He was an average reader, but had trouble grasping more abstract concepts that advanced books conveyed. But this didn't sway Eli's endless optimism and smiles, much to his momma's relief. She did have to go ham on a few teachers that gave her flack for her son's low grades. "Was he studying at home?" they would ask. "He's doing all his homework but his answers are half wrong. Is he putting forth any effort at all?" Jane would glare them down to submission, stating that her son spent many agonizing hours struggling to study and complete that homework. So Eli was put into special tutoring to help him through school. Unfortunately for the kid, his struggle with book learning and the special tutoring didn't do any favors to his social standing. His classmates thought he was a little weird, and the meaner ones would corner him in the playground to call him names (mostly "dummy" and "fatso"; he was perfectly healthy, just naturally thick like his momma). But he would forgive them all and even try to befriend them, which weirded out the bullies even more, so they all eventually just left him to do his thing. He'd play here and there with the gentler kids, but was never able to make any friends that stuck with him.
It was when little Eli was twelve years old and slogging through middle school that his first life tragedy struck. He was at home sitting with his momma as she helped him through a particularly nasty math problem, when someone knocked on their door. Eli peeked curiously around his momma as she answered it. He recognized the man: it was one of his poppa's work friends. He looked grim. The Walrein, hat in his hands, delivered news that shook apart Eli and his momma's world.
Eli's father had died. The ship he was working on went down in a storm. They had found the body only a few hours ago.
It was the first time Eli had seen his mother break down. She cried off and on for days, then was completely numb during the funeral. Right when they got home afterwords, she secluded herself in her room and cried even harder. Eli didn't know what to do. He cried too, being old enough to grasp what had happened to his beloved poppa. But his momma was barely taking care of herself, much less Eli. So a couple of weeks into her mourning, Eli stepped up to the plate. He began trying to care for himself and his momma the best he could, resulting in many burnt meals and a few broken (but clean) plates. He studied all on his own. He bought groceries all on his own. He brought food to his momma and made sure she ate. His kindness began to reach his momma and slowly but surely, she pulled out of her funk. She apologized to Eli for abandoning him until she ran out of ways to say she was sorry. He forgave her every time.
As Eli struggled his way through middle school and into high school, he continued to help out his momma. Jane still called all the shots in the family, but Eli helped her the best he could at every turn with heavy lifting, grocery shopping, and more successful attempts at cooking. When he wasn't studying or helping his momma, Eli was at the gym working out. He wanted to become as strong as his poppa so that he could protect his momma from any more hurt. This left little time for a social life, but Eli didn't mind. His momma was all he needed. It was during a school field trip that Eli stumbled across a Moon Stone and evolved into a Clefable, bulking up even more. His initially surprised momma was thrilled when he came home and was a good foot taller than he was when he was a Clefairy.
He eventually graduated high school after four hard years of studying and being tutored. His momma wanted Eli to go to college or a trade school, but Eli insisted on getting a job so he can help support her. Despite her protests, Eli landed a job working at the town docks lifting crates and other heavy objects. He felt closer to his poppa this way, and it helped him maintain his physique without spending time at the gym. Plus the little extra cash went a long way for him and his momma.
Life went smoothly for a few years, Eli reaching the age of 23. It was only a few months after his birthday that his second life tragedy took him by surprise: the Disaster. The Clefable was out buying groceries when the sky turned dark and then tore asunder. Eli and other bystanders stood in shock for a few heartbeats as heavy rainfall drenched them immediately and lightning ripped through the sky. After the first earthquake subsided, Eli broke out of his shock and dropped his groceries, starting to sprint in the direction of home. For the better part of an hour, he pushed his way through earthquakes, people, and wreckage to get home to his momma. When he finally arrived at the little house they shared, he found a collapsed pile of debris where it once stood. Eli stood in the pouring rain in shock before tearing into his former home, calling out to his momma as his tears mixed with the rainwater running down his face. His already scratched and bruised body is beat up up more by the effort.
Then he finds her: a broken body in the midst of the rubble. Eli is dragged away screaming by the emergency personnel now flooding the town. The rest is a blur to the Clefable - he remembers being rushed to a hospital to be treated for his physical wounds, then staying because of his emotional ones. He was numb for weeks, so numb that his hospital staff have to coax him into eating. A shell of his former self, he spent hours staring out the window at nothing in particular, wandering the halls aimlessly, and sleeping.
Then one day, when Eli was sitting in a small lounge area in the hospital staring at nothing, he felt a gentle tug on his sleeve. He slowly looked over to see a small Wishiwashi child in a hospital gown staring up at him with wide eyes. She squeezed the worn stuffed Teddiursa closer to her chest and asked Eli, "Why are you so sad?"
There was a pause, then he replied in a quiet voice, "I lost someone very important to me."
The girl nodded. She said, "I lost some important people too." She paused, looking thoughtful. "Would this important person want you to be sad?"
Eli looked a bit taken aback by the child's wisdom, then a small but sad smile crept onto his face. "No," he whispered in reply. "No she wouldn't."
"What would she want you to be?"
The Clefable's smile faded into an expression of deep thought as he looked up towards the ceiling. What would his mom want him to be? Or do? Then a glimmer came back into his dead eyes. "She'd want me to keep going, stay stubborn, be kind, and let happiness come." He looked back at the girl, a true smile on his face. "She'd tell me that whenever things would get tough."
The girl smiled back, hugging her Teddiursa plush tight.
Curious, Eli asked the girl, "Why did you come up and ask me that, anyways?"
The girl's smile faded into a frown, sadness showing in her eyes. "My parents always told me to help sad people." Her face fell to the floor. "I miss them a lot, even though they'd always say I should keep going if they ever left me."
Eli felt his heart crack. He lifted his stiff body from its place in knelt in front of the little Wishiwashi. "You're very brave. Your parents would be very proud of you."
She smiled a bit sadly at him. "My name is Louise. What's yours?"
"Elijah. But you can call me Eli."
"Nice to meet you, Eli."
The two became fast friends, Louise lifting Eli's spirit like he had for his momma when his poppa died, and Eli keeping the lonely little girl company while she recovered in the hospital. About a week later, Louise was picked up by a kind looking aunt and uncle. Eli and Louise said a sad goodbye and the next day, Eli finally checked himself out of the hospital.
He felt a bit lost in the ruined Emerald Port. The town was a shell of its former self, with collapsed houses and flooded alleys everywhere Eli went. The Clefable wanders the town aimlessly, wondering what to do with his life now that everything had changed. All he knew for sure is that he wanted to help others like Louise had helped him. The Clefable found a temporary job at a group working to clear debris from the town and took up temporary residence at a hotel. For now, that was enough.
Then word of the guilds reached the Clefable's large ears. Eli perks up immediately. A group that explores mysterious dungeons and helps citizens? It sounded just like what he was looking to do. And the biggest and best one wasn't too far away in Everstone City. Without a second thought, Eli quickly gathered the money he had and made his way to Everstone City to try and join the fabled Everstone City Guild.
ADDITIONAL // "Let me know if you need anything!"
Extras:
- He has a surprisingly lovely baritone singing voice. He has to be careful when singing since sometimes he accidentally uses Sing and puts his listeners to sleep.
- Eli loves warm home cooked foods like bread, soup, and other hearty meals. He also adores tea and is working to get better at brewing it. Oolong is his favorite!
- He has zero sense of fashion, going for practicality for his clothing choices. His momma dressed him for as long as she could. She apologizes on his behalf for his boring clothing choices.
- He hasn't really ever had time to think about romance, nor is he sure if he's even had a crush. So he's not quite sure about what his orientation is. Either ace or pan, maybe.
- Eli's always amazing when he meets someone taller than him! Like wow!!
- If you're sad or distressed he's there in a flash with a blanket, some tea, and cuddles (if you're comfy with cuddles, he'll back off if you're not).
- Just a big cinnamon roll.
