Description Eve and the serpent...

Ceramic, fired bisque. No armature and no molds used.

I like ceramic clay (sometimes) because I can rough in the sculpture really quickly. I also like how, without an armature, I can "tweak" the pose, make subtle changes in the twist of the torso, neck, or legs... an option that is not as easy when building over an armature. The finished sculpture is sometimes not as refined as other materials would be, but it serves as a good quick study and perhaps a maquette for something later.

I did not use a model or any reference on this piece-- sculpted from my imagination only. :-D

Edit 1-6-13: Thank you, dA staff, for featuring this as a DD! I am grateful to everyone for checking out my work, and will respond to any comments that you care to leave me

Great piece! I like figurative work too (in clay), and I like the freedom to "tweak" the pose as you say. I love the hands here. About how big is this?

Very nice. It is wonderfully crafted. I don't feel her expression fits, though. I'd say it would be an expression of apprehension rather than happiness.

Well I think traditionally Eve would be shown as apprehensive or pensive, but I wanted her to appear more innocent, naive and childish. A little less blameworthy

Hmm... I see. In that case, her expression does fit.

Very impressive! No armature and no model? That's pretty amazing. I've sculpted a little bit and really struggled even with a model and such. Fantastic work, I particularly like the rough rock texture, it perfectly offsets the smooth skin. Great job!

I remember doing ceramic sculpture in college. My works turned out nothing as beautiful as this. Now they're sitting in my mom's yard getting patina'd while the squirrels bury their nuts around there.

Haha... Yes my school attempts with ceramics were not much to be proud of. I only returned to the medium recently and discovered that I could do some neat stuff now that I have some more skills

Eve's expression is what makes the piece. I have always pictured the conversation between Eve and the snake as being much more serious, but perhaps this is more how it went. The snake is being charming and flattering and Eve is totally buying it. She thinks the snake is the funniest and cleverest "person" that she has ever met.

JustinCissell In reply to ce-e-vel [2013-01-07 00:15:53 +0000 UTC]

You got it!! Yes, you are the only one to articulate that so far! That's totally the story I wanted this to tell!!
The snake would be much more effective if he was charming. We've all tried to persuade people by acting suspicious and pushy, and that rarely, if ever, works as a sales tactic. :-D
