Description The Journey Home

I've been working on this one for what it feels like a long time. Mostly because I was too lazy to finish it awhile back. But now it's done and i'm happy with it, I originally had a different plan of what I wanted to do with the terrain, but I didn't go with that.

Instead I went with the whole lunar landing on the moon type thing. I think it looks pretty good, although I don't know if the photo manips are as good as they could be, but oh well.. it worked out fine. I thought about doing a little short story on the piece since people seemed to like the last one I did. But I dunno, maybe some other time.

Well as always I hope everybody likes it, and i'm always open it critics or just general comments about the piece.

Love it! The perspective is fantastic! It's like I'm actually -there-. The placement of the planets around/behind the terrain is wonderful, and the shading is great! Shading is often the hardest and most frustrating part of any space/sci-fi art and is a pain to get juuuust right.... I have spent many hours of frustration in doing so, having OCD as I do. Hand-shading is a fantastic way to achieve the 'perfect' look....even if it does take longer I digress - fantastic work n_n I hope to see more of you in the future!

Thanks

Don't worry, I have massive OCD when it comes to things like that as well, actually pretty much everything in general. Hand-shading I have tried before and honestly only to it when I have no other option. What I usually do (may be a little different now since I use other methods for things now than I did back when I made this) is copy the base of the planet (that I used with the circular shape tool to make the basic shape of the planet in the conceptual stage) and gaussian blur it till I'm satisfied with the result and move it into position. Depending on how you have the layers set up in your scene, you may or may not need to use a mask to get rid of the rest of the shadow side that isn't on the planet.

And if your left with a light ring around your planet, then just select the planet and expand the selection by 1 or 2 pixels and fill in that area with white on the layer mask. Sorry for the long comment, I get carried away with explaining shit, but I hope that helps at all.

This has been the terragen/space scene i have always been trying to make, but i just can't get my terrain looking anything realistic. =\

Thanks, yeah realism in terragen can be kinda hard to do. Sometimes you get lucky though

yeah man, you got real lucky

But im inspired to go back and try another darkened space/terragen scene again. I never got one to work well so this should be interesting!

Ah, I knew the predecessor. But in this version I can see much more, it's lighter and the characters are a nice touch! Cool atmosphere.
