I can be within inches of one where I live and not see it. Them and katydids are incredibly good at camouflage. I think I've seen maybe 3 mantises in real life here, that's how good they are at hiding!

yeah, they're pretty good at that. only reason i spotted this one was looking for reference photos of a rose, then noticed the 'leaves' of the rose bush move in a peculiar way...

yes it was odd was just looking at the rose (for reference material, to draw the plant...) when one of the leaves started moving!
