Description A soldier and a child in Adinkerke, near Dunkirk, August 1917. I saw this photo in a book i bought ('Shots From The Front' by Richard Holmes) and i found it so touching and sweet. I imagine the photo he is holding is of his own family. Lovely image from the First World War (which i think is in the Imperial War Museum archives in London).

0.5 mechanical pencil.

that's so sweet, especially when you think of what he must have been through, and then he gets to see who i'm guessing may be his daughter? lovely drawing

This picture reminded me of the story of my grandfather, who lived in Ukraine and at age 5 had to hide under the floor of the house along with his younger brothers. And sometimes Belarusian partisan came to them at night and sing to them lullabies and cook them potatoes, because that had nothing to eat. Great-grandmother was then in hospital suffering from typhoid.

Two things:

1) Your work is incredible, I thought this was a black&white photomanip the first time I glanced at it. FAVE!

2) Your signature is just...too amazing for words. "Dance, magic dance!" *shakes spandex covered hips* Ahh, Labyrinth xD

This looks simply beautiful, I really love the effect of not having the background, It doesn't allow your atetntion to therefore be disrupted and you can simply focurs on the soldier and the infant. This is simply amazing, I really ve the affection displayed here and it creates a beautiful atmosphere around the whole drawin.
Well done with this, I'd give you a gold medal for it if I could ;]

Thankyou so much, i'm happy that i've done such a lovely moment justice. I always find it quite emotional looking through photos taken in the First World War, with so much death and sorrow. But when i saw that photo in the book i bought, and a good number of other happy photos in it, i felt i had to draw it because of the hope, love and plain humanity presented in it. I might draw another one of the photos eventually, they are all so lovely. Thanks so much for your comment

^-^ You're more than welcome! I love looking through old photos as well--some of my favorites are of the Christmas truce in 1914. Have you read Silent Night by Stanley Weintraub? It's very powerful and poignant...I'm sure you'd like it.

I don't think i have read that...unless it is a war poem, in that case i probably have (we studied WWI when i was at school and read many of the poems written at the time). I'll look it up, thankyou

Hi thanks for the comment, sorry i don't now if you can get it from anywhere on the internet. The picture was from a book i bought (the title of it is in my description of this picture), and in turn i think the picture actually resides in the London Imperial War Museum archives - perhaps check their site? It should be listed on google. Good luck, don't worry too much about finding WWI pictures, you can find them on loads of sites on the internet.

A really brilliant image.

I think other people have identified him as British and having long service chevrons and a injury stripe. To this i would add that I reckon he might be a Gunner in the Royal Foot Artillery, as he carries no badges of rank (no Chevrons pointing down on the arm denoting an NCO; nor stars or crowns on the eppaulette showing an officer) and his cap badge looks like it could be that of the RFA; i looked up various ww1 cap badges and the Artillery looks like it might be closest, although I could be wrong on that front.

Thankyou so much for your comment and the information. So he might be a gunner for the artillery? The book i have hardly deduced much about the man, and i really appreciate more insight. I think it is important to remember as much as possible about the many soldiers who fought in the First World War. I studied it in history for a time, but it was never really in-depth, and we studied more of Field Marshall Haig and why the war began etc etc. Thankyou again

I'd add that in Proffessor Holmes' book, "Tommy", there is a very similar image of the same chap, although he is not wearing his cap, and neither does he hold a photograph as he does in your picture. As the image is small, I cannot make out the specific details, but if you look on his eppaulette, the badge should say his regiment / corps, so you might want to check to see if you can make out what it says. I'd really recommend Tommy, icidentally, if you are interested in the First World War (particularly in the British soldier of the time) as it is very well written indeed.

very beautiful,
i think you did capture it well, and i like when things are simple too

i see it as maybe he is holding a photo of something like a rainbow or a stream in the woods.
telling the baby, we will be there soon, when its over.

Hi,

This piece caught my eye right away, it is beautifully rendered.

Yes, he's a British soldier and with a few long service stripes too!

Lovely work.

Thankyou! Yeah it was the long-service chevrons and the injury stripe that made me hesitant as to where the soldier was from. Thanks for the confirmation, it does not matter what country the soldier is from, but i was just curious because i'm British myself

Thankyou. It is a good book, i was just randomly browsing some books in the history section of a bookshop and it immediately caught my eye. Good photographs inside, quite a few i haven't seen before that the author gathered from various archives. This one of the soldier and child i had definitely never seen before, even though it is at the Imperial War Museum in London and i've been there a few times. They must not have it on display, i think i would have noticed a photo like this.
