"Alright kid-look at me." Keke crouched down to Milo's eye level for his pre-class pep talk as the boy suspiciously buckled his helmet. "You've got an advantage coming in here as the... Well not the reigning champion since you missed last year but as the first winner of this class. The jumps are the same, the arena is the same, you've got this. Just focus on getting a clean round above all else. Cash is a Moole foal so he'll take every opportunity you give him but for the love of god don't slice it. You like to pull all that fancy shit fully trained horses can do and this is not a jump off, do not get fancy just go clean."

Standing up and ducking past him, Milo straightened his show jacket and took a few steps backwards. "I'm not really worried about how I'm gonna do, it's more how he's gonna react." He gestured to Cash as the horse stood placidly next to Jakobi. "Dude's not really a fun horse to ride and he's a lot to handle."

Keke scrunched his face, silencing the blond. "You're not gonna find very many fun horses at this level of competition. Moole was the horse of a lifetime and he was a goddamn nightmare, showing him was always one of the most stressful times of my life and I've been to prison several times." The man paused, looking to Jakobi who nodded a confirmation. "Coda is the only genuinely nice horse we've brought and with any luck you'll be at her level in a few years while she's still showing. Doing this professionally you don't have the choice of waiting for good horses, you just have to take whatever talented trainwreck they give you and make it work."

"Wow you are really bad at pep talks." Milo deadpanned, taking Cash's reins from the other rider and tightening the stallions girth in preparation for their number to be called.

Jakobi threw his palms up, stepping away from the horse as Milo began to lead him away. "He's right, I've been riding as long as you've been alive and there is not a single horse I've ridden professionally that I'd want to own. I'd rather cut off my hand than ride Zen tonight but I'm still doing the class because he's the kind of horse it takes to win that. We know he's the kind of horse that's gonna win it. I've got Switch for fun, this is my job."

Milo furrowed his brow, stopping and turning around to stare at the two men. "You guys really don't have fun doing this? Why would you do something for so long and at such a high level if you hate it?"

Keke shrugged, running a hand through his hair. "I don't fully hate it, I just don't like showing. I would much rather spend my whole life training but there's no way to make it as a pro trainer without a successful show record so you can sit people down and say 'Hey, this is exactly what I can do for you and here's why you should hire me.'."

"Pretty much," Jakobi picked up, gesturing to their surroundings with the brush in his hands. "It's nicer if it's for yourself but these aren't your own personal achievements. They belong to the horse first, then the stables second. Maybe you'll get a shoutout if they're your own personal horses and your own stables but other than that you need to do this out of your love of horses or it's not worth the amount of effort put into it. You didn't breed these horses and you didn't make these horses, you are just along for the ride 99% of the time. The world was a lot more fun back when I was 15 jumping logs on a beach because I loved it and then before you know it you're 31 at an international show there only to make someone else look good. We do this because we're competitive and I don't know a single person at this level who think's this is more fun than jumping half a meter at home when the reason it's fun isn't the ribbons."

"Holy shit," Milo shook his head, uneasily glancing around to see if anyone else had heard before backing slowly in the direction of the ring. "You guys are really, really bad at pep talks. Like really bad, you are stressing me all the way out." He pointed his thumb over his shoulder, still backing towards the ring as Cash ambled lazily after him. "Alright, well. I'm gonna go do my class and work on not being completely dead inside like you guys."

"Just don't fucking slice it." Keke ordered, crossing his arms as he watched the pair go. Coming up behind him with the rest of the days horses, Jakobi handed him Zen's leadrope and squinted after them.

"He's gonna slice it isn't he."

"Yeah."

I'm in love with that zebra jump
And I absolutely love the composition even more!  Those light mountains in the back with the dark trees in the front make such an awesome contrast that the jumper literally jumps to the center of the drawing!
Really nice job
