Also on other tip, invest in a really good craft knife, a one which is easy to hold and use. A one which is smooth when youre cutting, it really helps to create a neat cut in the image.

Actually ever since I earned my degree in medicine, I use a scalpel from the OR to cut my paper with. They're quite similar to the ones the professors used when I was at Parson's School of Design during high school.

I have just got round to reading your comments in the collage challengers group.
My answer to you question would be to continue practicing and experimenting. I began collaging almost two years ago and they were really informed by my painting in terms of composition and colours so that how i began thinking of collage when i first started. But play around with depth and composition a lot I find that trial and error create a lot of great outcomes sometimes.
And also another tip, if you find some interesting image and have no use for it, keep it save those little gems up for your special collages

Scale for one--the contrast in scale between the background and your main figure. The placement of that red piece in the upper right corner--which is where the eye wants to go, and leading to that place with the butterfly. Cutting the collar and half-button so everything isn't in-your-face obvious. How's that?!

Yes, yes it does. Like when I try to clean my desk and end up making art with what I find on it. And an even bigger mess in the process.
