Description This is my magnum opus, and represents where I am right now as an artist, done for my first painting show. it is 40X40

I hope that you all enjoy it.

It is called The Ketch because that is the type of boat that it is.
Let me know what you think!

I LOVE colours ;3; and this is so colourful. It think it takes an amazing talent to be able to manipulate colours in the manner you've done here.

I really like this But, despite you said I can't imagine the whale being very far away. To me it almost seems like you're trying to create one of those illusion pictures, and the whale is floating in the air but then suddenly there is water and a boat.
Like I said though, I really like the painting. The surrealistic quality makes it pretty unusual

Unfortunately the original sold for a hefty sum couf1000couff, (just proud cuz it was the most expensive thing I ever sold.) I am considering starting to do prints. That is a great compliment though

This is awesomeness! I just have to fav it.

Not much to critique here, the colors are great, I just love the ship in the center of the picture, though I would have added a bit more color to the area around the whales eye, like around the edge of the mouth.

Traditional art FTW!

I love how the ship appears to be sailing beyond the surface of the painting; my only suggestion would be that in future compositions, avoid placing the focal point so close to the center. In this piece the vertical placement is fine, but the ship is a bit too close to horizontal center to me.

The colors are so incredibly vivid; I bet this painting looks amazing in the gallery!

Amazing piece! truely beautiful, I love how you've done the sunset look in such a different way and the ripples from the little boat give it a very 3D look. I wish I could paint lol

Very nice. I am especially fond of the colors and the way you've used them to show depth, force and liquidity. The size scale between the whale and the ship really gives the viewer a sense of immensity. The whale appears to have an interesting gruff expression which ties nicely in to his size and how I'd image a whale this size to be.

Very good work.

I'm not sure if the whale is under some really clear water, or if the whale is part of the scenery. Either way I love it! I especially love the use of color here. The perspective is great too :3

Absolutely love this piece, it's incredible. I have a soft spot for whales, but this is really just amazing. I love the colors you used and the surrealism that plays between the boat and the whale-- I still don't really understand it! But that's really neat, I love their relationship and how it's not quite clear what's going on. It's a really neat painting and I think you executed it brilliantly.

Alchemy-Art [2008-08-26 20:06:46 +0000 UTC]

First of all id like to say well done on the originality and "spice" of the picture. being a traditional artist most of the time myself, i know the love that goes into each painting. This has such a surreal feeling to it, my eyes are constantly pulled to different parts of the painting due to the many different colours, its an exciting piece, i dont think you can really say much in the way of "technical faults" because it comes to a point in this type of art where u cant always be truely technical because it will ruin it, i love the dancing traces on the water and the fact that the boat really looks "on top" of the water and the whale half beneath, i think thought this could be achieved with greater effect by adding some of that lovely limely and aqua colours to show where the top of the water begins and some darker bits for where it ends, thats if that is the effect you are going for. altogether a wonderful piece, plenty of different strokes used that all nit into each other like a beautiful patchwork blanket, keep doing traditional, you are original and good at it.

I love this! I dunno why but it reminds me of The Pirates of Dark Water - awesome cartoon!! I like it very much and I love that we can see the texture of your brushstrokes. Texture is gooooood. But to me the whale looks a little off, and I see others have already commented on this so I won't go into huge detail. Kudos You know, this would look nice on one of those arty gift cards

Heehee, that is one giant whale. I'd congratulate the person who would be able to catch him.
Like everyone else, I love the colors. My only problem with this piece is that the whale kind of looks like he's floating in midair, while the ship is sailing on the edge of some cliff. Perhaps my perspective is skewed because I'm not looking at it abstractly but 'tis just my opinion. Wonderful work nonetheless!

Kansbar In reply to Doogsieip [2008-08-26 19:10:35 +0000 UTC]

the boat is supposed to be on the water and the whale right underwater but really far away and imagine is crystal clear water. Thanks for the comment.
