Description A little something for *ToniBabelony , based on his "Bound for Termination"

The last thing the Shik could remember, was a bang, a shock, an earth-shuddering crash that shook through her body. She was dead - she must have been. The hit to her head was hard, it felt as if her skull had shattered into a thousand pieces.

Hours, days, eons seemed to have passed before the feeling in her head subdued. The world that had slipped into a hue of grey slowly seemed to rebuild itself, until with a flick of her eyelids, the girl opened her eyes again, seeing light, seeing shapes, seeing colours.

In front of her, a dot of yellow and pintpoints of blue formed themselves on a blot of flesh. A red streak transformed itself into a smile; waves shaped themselves into curls of blond hair. Trying to focus her eyes, the shik saw a friendly face staring down at her, a girl not quite, but very much unlike herself.

"Allez, regarde, elle a ouvert ses yeux!" a soft voice said. Looking around, the Shik could see a second blond-haired girl, almost the spitting image of the other girl, looking down at her. Only now, she began to become fully aware of her surroundings. The heavy smell of desinfectants penetrated her brain, the noise of feet running around in corridors hit her ears. A hospital - she was in a hospital. Had she somehow survived the bullet to her brain?

"Non, ne bouge pas... don't move!" the girl sitting in front of her said. "Le docteur said you shouldn't move, c'était une accident grave, a really terrible accident! You were lucky to survive it with so few injuries, mais... you took a massive hit to ze head! Monsieur le docteur, he said you will have to rest in ze bed for at least a month!"

"What happened?" the Shik reacted. Images of a gun, memories of a shot seemed to penetrate her brain for a moment. Her throat felt rough and dry, and she had difficulties suppressing an urge to throw up. Was this some kind of dream?

"Relax," the girl said in her strange accent, "you must know... le docteur, he said that it might be a while before all of the memories come back. But you were lucky, l'avion... the aircraft, it did not catch fire, otherwise you wouldn't have made it. Nicole et Blanca, zey saw it happen, zey ran and dragged you out of ze wreckage. Les pilotes too, they made it, but... I'm zo sorry, le radio, zey could not save him."

Confused, the Shik looked at the blonde girl. "Aircraft? Pilots? Radio? What are you talking about? Where am I? And why..."

Looking around her, the Shik girl noticed everything about the room she was in looked out of time. The thick and course sheets, the iron-framed bed, the outdated clothes, the odd, wavy hair on the girl that was talking to her. A pain shot through her brain, for a moment the world turned in front of her head. She was sure now. She was dead, she was dying... this was all just a dream, it had to be, right...?

Yet another of *Shabazik 's Shik girls suddenly finds herself oddly in my INU-Air universe. Whatever happened to her...?

No, it crashed into some hangars, actually.

Douglas C-47-DL c/n 4549 was built for the USAAF during World War II.  Built at the Douglas plant, it was delivered in 1942 as 41-38600 on July 29th.  It arrived in the UK on December 24th 1942, and was assigned to the US 8th Air Force.  After the war ended, the aircraft was stored as war surplus.  As such, it was sold to SABENA in the beginning of 1946.  After an overhaul, it was delivered to SABENA at the then Haren/Evere airport on March 7th, and officially registered on March 21st 1946 as OO-AUR.  Still painted in basic camouflage colours but sporting its titles and registration, the aircraft served on the SABENA network until September 17th of 1946, when during take-off on a flight to London, the aircraft stalled on take-off and crashed near vertically onto a hangar.  The four passengers on board survived, although they did sustain injuries; the pilot and co-pilot were seriously injured but survived too.  However, the third crewmember, the radiotelegraphist, was killed in the accident.

Here is a picture of the actual aircraft: www.skystef.be/regi/OO-AUR.htm

Brussels-Haren/Evere airport was the former civilian airport serving the capital.  It was built by the Germans during World War I, and used by the Belgians as a mixed military/civilian airport after the war.  It was where SABENA was founded in 1923; up to 1940 the company used the airport for their civilian operations.  After World War II, the airport had become too small for the new generation of civilian aircraft, and gradually the operations were moved to the nearby airfield of Melsbroek.  In 1949, Haren was officially abandoned as the civilian airport serving the capital, but the airport continued to be used as a maintenance base up until the mid-1950s.  When the new Zaventem terminal was built (1956-1958), the old Haren airport was abandoned so the access road from the capital to Zaventem could be built.  In the mid-1960s, the southern part of the airfield was  broken up to make way for the NATO headquarters, after NATO was forced to move from Paris to Brussels.  The old civilian terminal of 1929 remained in use as the headquarters of the Belgian Air Force up until the mid 2000s; they were demolished around 2009/2010 to make way for the new NATO headquarters.  The only part of the old airfield that still remains, are the SABCA aircraft factories which used to lie on the northern boundary of the airfield.

Is this the real life? Is it just fantasy?

Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality...

Merveilleux!

Very nice 'saving' effort of my poor little Shik. I like how you used your personal experience of hospitalisation in this! *And I'm glad I can still read French*

You need to try to ink some of these sometime, Nikko! : ) I think they'd look swell!!

(If you thank me for this on my wall I'm going to bite your fingers off.)

I'll certainly try to put some inks onto this one as soon as I've got the time for it.

And I'm going to thank you here!  That way, you can't bite my fingers off - and you better shouldn't either, otherwise there'll be no inking!!

Perhaps a god being decided that a world of airlines and trains could always use another stewardess!

I always love to give an unwanted Shik a second chance.  I feel they deserve it!!

There is a certain grittiness inherent with them.  They are essentially a form of slave race in a sci-fi setting despite official and legal claims that slavery doesn't exist.

Shiks have to earn their freedom, just as people have to work to pay off their student loans?  They are the ultimate in wage slaves?

Even taking such things into account, just illegal and extra legal events happen to regular people in the real world, far worse stuff could happen to a "legally lower" folk.  Such abuses to shiks, and their getting casually ground up in a figurative meat grinder is the stuff that makes life uncertain and horrible for lower ranked folks.

Of course, for a long time of their existance, they exist in a setting where slavery doesn't (officially) exist - because only humans can be considered slaves, and the Shiks, being a clone race, don't legally count as humans!

And that is their great tragedy.  They were grown, cultivated, produced at a mass pace, never having been 'born', never having had a genuine childhood, never having had choices.  Their life was pretty much set from the day they were commissioned, their tasks set for them, their date of decommissioning known from the moment they drew their first breath - death being the only thing that could change their set destiny.

And that is the thing in which my Shiks differ.  They have been rescued, reset - programmed with false memories, so their traumatic pasts are overwritten, just distant nightmares in a corner of their mind.  They've been given new lives, individual thoughts, ambitions and hope.  No longer are they expected to fight on battlefields, face certain death or injury.  The only thing I want from them is a certain dedication to their job, and their nicest smile...

Oh, all too familiar to me as well.  I've woken up in hospital after an operation twice, albeit years ago now.  Each time it was a real mindfuck, slipping away in one setting in the middle surgery; the next moment being waking up in a recovery room.

Having had the experience did help me write the general setting...

Not really that unreasonable, if you think about it.  It gave me, in turn, an unreasonable urge to punch anybody holding a syringe in their hands... <.<

Oh my god lol I used to be alright with it I could watch them stick the needle in and everything not even slightly afraid. After three surgeries and that /one/ shot. Alright. Okay. Once you've had a shot in your buttcheek needles take on a whole new perspective. Shot in the arm is whatever and you expect a little sting and over. No no you drop your pants and they promptly jam what feels like a screwdriver in yer ass. After that I cant move through a hospital in anything less than a panic xD!
