Description Another splodge drawing! This time a weirdy freaky Dragon guy who I decided to call Brohahn, after the bad-guy in Heavenly Sword (which Jason was playing while I drew this.. even though he's just told me his name was Bohan, but I don't care ) ... cool game btw. :]
Not sure I trust this guy.. looks like he wants to much me
Man I'm loving these splodge drawings right now hope you guys aren't getting sick of them! ^__^

1 hour 30 minutes, in "the usual" (markers, roller-ball pen and tip-ex) on brown paper

Nice work - it has a slightly lionesque quality to it.

thanks! I hadn't thought of that at all but now you mention it I can vaguely see what you mean .. the structure of the face and then the crest is a little like a mane I suppose.. - cheers for commenting, as always!

they're pretty lurid compared to my usual colour pallet choice... guess you got to work with what you got w/limited colour options that real media proposes! .. to used to having all the colours of the rainbow at my fingertips with photoshop! LOL

WDCat In reply to KatCardy [2010-09-01 16:37:21 +0000 UTC]

And you're strong and confident with color, something I'm definitely not, heh!

KatCardy In reply to WDCat [2010-09-01 20:27:20 +0000 UTC]

You're not? .. I haven't seen any of your art so I can't really comment >.>
I wouldn't say I'm usually that confident when it comes to real media.. it's just these pictures are done in such a "slap'n'dash" mindset that whatever goes goes.. if I make a mistake I just work with it .. trying not to worry about the outcome probably gives these pics a different result to my usual attempts @ real media \:]

About the only color work I do (well, did) is painting the occasional fantasy figure. There are a few photos [link] ">here from a bored night where I decided to play with depth of field photos. I tend to be pretty tonal, not very adventurous in contrasting colors. I like what I've done well enough -- and then I look at pieces the high-level folks do and..... *sigh* I'll do pencil sketches once in a while but they're always monochrome (and done with good ol' #2 pencil lead, mechanical pencil and all that, heh). My forays into color in that medium have been disastrous at best! *laugh*

I love what you've been generating with this slap-n-dash mindset. You're being bold and confident and there's no such thing as a mistake because you just run with it. It looks like such fun!

KatCardy In reply to WDCat [2010-09-08 15:59:02 +0000 UTC]

hey, those figures look well painted to me!! to be honest in that kind of situation I tend to think that more subtle colour variations (like you've used) help the figure to feel more believable .. otherwise there's a danger that those fantasy figures can end up looking like cartoon dragons or something if they're too bright and eye-catching.
I tend to think that painting in 3D is so very much harder than doing 2D stuff, so if you can already paint figures that well I'm sure it's only a matter of time/practice before you felt more confident in 2D too
- You should totally give the splodge drawing a go if you have a chance, don't worry about it; just draw a splodgey shape (or get someone to draw one for you) then turn it into something... it doesn't matter if it's good or not, it's just fun

WDCat In reply to KatCardy [2010-09-09 15:38:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I really appreciate that! It's hard not to look at pieces like this though and know that while I would have done a good job on it, I wouldn't have given it the visual 'punch' it has. (That being said, I now totally want that dragon -- sans rider, preferably. Like I have the time to paint any more. )

Heh, for me the 3D is easier because I can use the contours and lines of the figure. 2D work? It's all on me! Splodges do sound like fun, darn it. I have a small sketch book around here somewhere. I'll have to dig it out and find my colored pencils (if I even still have them) and muck around with it in the evenings instead of spending so much time on the McBook in the evenings. There you go, being a good influence again!

cool dragon. i like the style.

coincidentally i been spending some of the day trying to think up all sorts of names for my baby dragons in a lil retro game i'm making. so far i've not been able to move past the placeholder name of 'dragon'. yes, i suck

also coincidentally i was replaying heavenly sword earlier too,

weeeheey! it's a good game, innit? :]
You ought to ask DA if you're having trouble finding names for characters.. this communities great for comming up with suggestions for stuff like that! ^-^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carnivius In reply to KatCardy [2010-09-01 16:10:53 +0000 UTC]

yeah though for some reason i've always found the game far, far too easy right up until the last boss at which point I always fail to beat him. I don't get it.

Asking DA wouldn't work. You seem to be confusing the amount of people who read your stuff to the piddly amount who read mine. It's ok anyways. I came up with a few. Just names of dragons from things I remember (puff, tiamat, spyro and such) and just other little names of fave things of mine I think will fit as a name (for example Drake, from Uncharted my fave game series ever)

thanks! I'm amazed that these sketches are coming out as well as they do in the scan actually.. normally my real media stuff gets totally ruined in the scanning process, but a bit of a tweak to the levels of these seems to put them right again, good stuff!
Cheers for commenting!

ahahaha! the lady-gator has fans when she doesn't even exist yet! .. umm.. I don't know! I did have a real urge to draw her and Mr Ab again but then when this recent "splodge drawing" urge started (and I got some coloured paper etc!) all I want to do is real media pics! .. maybe I'll have a go at drawing her up in markers instead of digitally... I'm more likely to do her soon that way
Cheers for showing such an interest!
