from what I understand, a commission is where someone requests a specific work from an artist and purchases it. like asking Kate-Fox to draw my original character or a character I chose from an anime in her style. artists tend to price these commissions in different ways based on the amount of work that's done - a uncolored character sketch, a colored character on a plain white background, a full scene with character and background scenery, etc. it's something that the requesting person and the artist have to discuss. oh, and, of course, the artist tends to want a reference of who/what the purchaser want them to draw - images of the anime character, a drawing or at least written description of the original character, etc - and if they want a certain pose (a battle / fighting pose), props (holding a staff), action (eating a piece of cake), emotion (startled by a spider), or whatnot, or if the artist has free rein and can draw what he/she wants as long as it has the buyer's requested character. again, the requester and artist talk this over, and not all artists may be willing to give you lots of choices due to time constricts (holiday season, school finals, just real life stuff) or current motivation levels.

(I'm not an artist, just someone who knows a few and likes to look at pretty things. so if I have anything wrong here, I hope that an actual artist will correct it so kawaiitrumpet doesn't get the wrong idea.)

It's a cultural thing, with mythological underpinnings, like the shape changing, often mischievous kitsune (foxes) and tanuki (raccoon-dog being the closest English equivalent) that have populated Japanese folklore and fables since ancient times, and in more modern times, manga, anime and video games (among other things too several and sundry, not to mention wildly off point, to cite here).  The direct relevance to the modern day 'animal' chara is that when in human guise, usually to trick humans, almost always an older, childless couple, into providing food and shelter for what they believe to be a child, a kitsune retained its fox ears and tail, albeit greatly reduced, which when inevitably noticed, caused the human hosts to react with fear or anger, or in happier cases, find them adorable and adopt the lost 'child' as their own.  In the end 'adorable' won out, and eventually--well, you see where this is headed; sorry to go all lecturey on ya.  I've been writing on anime and related subjects off and on for several decades now for fun and, occasionally, a little profit (more if any illustrations are wanted), so it's gotten to be a habit, I guess.     

After the cultural refs I shoulda just stuck with, And of course chara with furry ears and tails are just plain cute.  Could do without the below, too, I guess, but what the meiou, it might be a useful recommend.

To me, by the way, kitty-girls are ultra-kawaii; the cutest neko-shoujo I've met so far in anime is Eris of Asobi ni Iku-yo! (Let's go play!, known here as Cat Planet Cuties), who hails from the planet Catia (formerly known as Earth, changed out of courtesy shortly after they discovered our planet) on a mission to sample human culture, and food, and mores, and more food, and pool parties, and--well, you know it's not going to be anything too earth shaking (or is it?) when she announces her imminent arrival to the world with 'I'm coming to play!'.  Of course, you may already have made her acquaintance, but in case not, it's a very fun show, albeit a little naughty at times, and Eris and the other cat cuties who join her before you can say 'harem comedy' (the Catians make the home of a hapless high school grad their embassy; rivalrous diplomatic maneuvers ensue) or 'hello kitty!' are ebulliently bouncy and enthusiastically immodest, so not something for the chibi.

Anyway, my apologies for the intrusion.
