Description So... this devil's been in the works for quite some time. Finally managed to finish it, and felt the need to after discovering - much to my shock and awe - that a lot of people are either brand-new to this whole "commissioning" thing and just don't know how to go about it very well, or inadvertently create a lot of frustration and wasted time. The subject came up while I was noting with one of my current commission clients, , who deserves a lot of praise in my book for doing a really great job when it came to letting me know exactly what the desired commissions were all about as well as having a good amount of reference prepared.

So, I've taken some time to finish up this easy-to-follow 3-step guide on how to make the commission process go as smoothly as possible, and some tips on things to avoid if you don't want to alienate artists you want to commission (which does happen, unfortunately... some people can be jerks to artists, whether they realize it or not). This is not just about commissioning me, but pretty much any artist, and how to make client-artist relations be as hassle-free as possible.

But let's be real here... you only came for the cat pictures XD

Seriously though, I hope this helps out If you're an artist who accepts commissions and you agree with this, feel free to share it or give it a feature. I'll have more actual art uploaded soon.

Hehehe, if you haven't caught me in the act, I'd probably be guilty of a number of transgressions listed up there!! Β  Β Hopefully the description+jpeg I came up with in the end were all right though?

Yeah it's cool man. I can't blame people for being new at this and not quite knowing the ropes. I think there should be more resources out there for commission etiquette though, just to make everyone's lives easier, and also to show problem clients that we know what they look like.

Yours is a very extensive and detailed guide - I'm sure lots of people will find it helpful. I learned a lot from it! Β  Β AndΒ I've been commissioning artists for years - never realising I could organise things better and that my 4 page long essays and reference .zips are not exactly what the artist is looking for!

It's okay to be thorough. Just be sure to keep the descriptions relevant to what I'm supposed to paint. I get a lot of requests to do stuff and the commission descriptions mention stuff that isn't actually relevant to what's happening in the actual picture, but stuff that happened at a different time or backstory that doesn't matter for the image. It can confuse the artist or result in important information getting lost in a sea of irrelevant stuff, so to make sure the client is happy with the image and the artist knows what they're supposed to do, it's just easier to keep everything as relevant to the image itself as possible.
