Description Hurrhurr, more art!

I have mixed feelings about this piece - I do enjoy how the characters came out, but the background is It gave me problems. So... this was mainly meant to be a portfolio piece, I dunno if I want it to be anymore or not. But, it was great practice at drawing animals! Which I should totally do more often.

Let me also tell you of how yellow and red are the colors I hate the most out of EVERYTHING ARGHHH! Also, I am SO never using Canson paper again for watercolors For some reason, my colors wouldn't sink into the paper like they normally should.. instead they kinda sat thickly on top as if they were acrylics or something. SO annoying, because them I couldn't layer the colors as much as I usually do >:/ From now on I'll stick to my first love, Arches cold press, even if it is a bit expensive.

Ok so the picture is kind of an illustration to an old Russian fairytale, about Tsarevitch Ivan (Prince Ivan), the Firebird and the Grey Wolf. Since I suppose fairytales are mostly public domain now, you can read the story here: [link] if it pleases you

Ivan is attempting to steal the firebird, and then the cage, but he's obviously gonna get caught x: Which is why I kinda like Russian fairytales, the heroes do dumb stuff and pay for it, and aren't perfect. Ivan is so adorable, though, cos he cries for like half the story

So yeah - 12" x 16" watercolors and gouache and junk

The colors are fabulous! You did a great job on them. I love the warm colors of the phoenix, and the contrast with the cooler blues of the sky. The fur looks very...umm, furry, for lack of a better word too. Wonderful work!

I feel a little awkward for having favourited all four of your most recent works - it must make a favourite look somewhat worthless but I swear I never give them away without thought and probably less than twice a month, but I can't help it, your recent pics just all blow me away so much @_@ comment will follow soon I hope, I'm in the process of catching up on my message center items <3

I see no proof what so ever that you had trouble with this picture. It looks so vibrant in the colors and everything that I can't even see it's watercolors. HOMG WATERCOLORS??

No, but the point is that the end result doesn't give anything of that kind away.

Thanks for the link, I -knew- that I knew that story!

First of all, the grey wolf really did come out fantastic. He looks very much like the guy who knows what's going on...sort of an 'Aw, hell,' look. The light on his fur from the firebird, and even just the fur itself looks really realistic.

And you say you had problems with the colors, but they look really nice, very deep and bright, and while it seems to me to be different from how your colors usually look, it certainly didn't come out poorly. The bird is done especially well, but I think what I like the most are the tiny little yellow specks sort of floating away from it all over the piece, barely noticeable like little falming bits of ash thrown off a fire. That was a very deft touch.

I think you've done very well.

Arches coldpress is good stuff! But I think the yellow looks fine. The red looks a bit muddy, but I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it. All of the other colours look great, especially the details of the grey wolf and the firebird. The expressions are wonderful too! You should definately do more animals and more fairy tales!

Yeah, I had to do the red over about 5-6 times until I was like ARGH enough already. :< Red is such a hard color to work with. Thanks so much for your comment though :3
