Description MORE art? ugh.

Neudacha (неудача) means bad luck or unlucky in Russian.

If you didn't know, I'm obsessed with tales of the firebird. This is another illustration from last semester's independent study with my fav professor. Again on the theme of transformation - I chose a tale about how the firebird came about. She was a talented weaver who refused to weave for Koschei the Deathless, who then turned her into a bird and attacked her as an eagle.

I worked with transformation as a way to sort out the idea of identity politics using mythologies that depict transcendental characters who change from story to story and within the story as well.

Done with home-made watercolors and here a less limited color palette because I wanted to use up the paints
I tried to use as little additive white as I possibly could here after a professor's critique that was relying to heavily on it to define my forms.

Pigments used: Malachite, burnt sienna, burnt umber, prussian blue, cadmium red, yellow ochre, chrome oxide green, zinc white.

Very Phoenix-like - I love the concept, and most of the drawing. I do think that the neck has sort of a weird angle, and that his face is kind of... odd...

Thumbs up!

I never knew there was this much about the firebird story, I've read a fairytale about it but that didn't include so much background story I think? @_@ whoa. Makes me curious.

I love how the fire came out! That was really well done. The concept itself is also executed nicely, very nice composition.

I love to see pieces about mythology that isn't Greek/Roman/Egyptian. As much as I love Egyptian mythology, I'm also interested in the stories from other countries. So I've enjoyed this piece and arnapkapfaaluk.

Beautiful rendering!

I thought you couldn't use Malachite and Cadmium together.

Also Chrome Green = Chromium Oxide?

(Sorry I'm a nerd)

Thanks for reminding me, I fixed it. Chrome oxide green indeed. Chrome green is the toxic shit.

Also, you're probably right. In about 100 years it will probably look icky. I don't really care considering I'll hate this by this time next year XD
