Description My first Silmarillion picture. Rejoice! I cannot BELIEVE I did that water. it looks so.. so.. EXCELLENT. I'm very proud of it.

"Thus at last the Teleri were overcome, and a great part of their mariners that dwelt in Aqualondë were wickedly slain. For the Noldor were become fierce and desperate, and the Teleri had less strength, and were armed with for the most part but with slender bows. Then the Noldor drew away their white ships and manned their oars best they might, and rowed them north along the coast..... Of the Kinslaying at Aqualondë more is told in that lament which is named Noldolantë, the fall of the Noldor, that Maglor made ere he was lost."

"The Noldor came at last far into the north of Arda; and they saw the first teeth of the ice that floated in the sea, and knew that they were drawing nigh to the Helcaraxe." - JRR Tolkien, The Silmarillion, Chapter 9, Of the Flight of the Noldor.

We'll leave you with those two quotes to explain - for this is not nessarily written into the book. Fëanor burned the ships at the Firth of Drengist, so as no one would go back for Fingolfin(the elf at the head of the second ship), who he eventually left behind in Araman, the wasteland of the north. But another reason he could not keep the ships, says I, was because they were so stained with blood that would never wash out, and they would serve ere the end as a reminder of the treachery of the Noldor and the Curse of Fëanor. And here in the picture, Fëanor is desperately eager to land.. or maybe he's pissed because his hated half-brother Fingolfin's ship is sailing farther ahead. Now a cold wind blows from the Helcaraxe, welcoming them to their curse. (this is me being dramatic )

Ok, so mostly people who have read the book will totally understand.. but.. if you haven't... don't fret, just enjoy my painting skills? *laughs* I painted this in a matter of three days - a RECORD for me. Here you see Fëanor, Maedhros, Maglor, Fingolfin, Turgon, Fingon, and others who you cannot see so easily.

Well done! I especially like the blood stains running from the eyes of the swan heads - as if the ships themselves are crying.

I've never seen the swan ships of the Teleri painted before and I love your version They're really very beautiful! Amazing water and scene, too.

This is a very sad part of the book. I wish fingolfin had stood up to feanor and left him on his own.

Good point about the blood on the ships, I have never though of it. [The real blood stains would be smaller, but that's just a detail ]

Very good illustration, I like that the ships are really huge, with such ships thousands of elves might have migrated from Aman. The colors and uneasy water give more tention to it. Little intriguing Feanorlooks great, impatient to reach the land. Haughty and fragile the same time. I guess other are Maedhros and Maglor? Good job!

This is an amazing picture! I love the detail in the sea (you should be proud!) but also the detail on the ships.
A small nitpick is that the blood seems very randomly added to the picture but the actual detail and drawing is very good nevertheless.

Yes, those waves are really crystalline. :3 Very cool. I imagine if you did make a fantasy movie of this, it would have water that glistened like so.

I have read it (repeatedly!) and worship the book, and really like your rendering of the swan-prowed ships of the Noldor. This is really nice, though at first I didn't see that it was blood on the ships, I thought it was just a cool effect you added in watercolour. Don't change it though, it works without being gory.

I wrote my undergrad dissertation on the Silmarillion! More the creation myth aspects of the piece, but even so, I think picked up quite a bit from the painting... The waves are very nicely done indeed - the blood as well on the ships, though at first I thought it should be bolder, stronger, really really appeals to my eye now, especially the natural way it has been splashed on the canvas, yet at the same time it matching the contours of the ships very well. Lovely.

Wow... I love it. All of that is truly beautiful. I love this part in the Silm. (because I love Fëanor and his sons), and this is portraited beautifully.

I rather imagined that Fëanor&Co alone were on the ships - and thus were able to leave Fingolfin&Co behind -, and that the other just walked. But I'm not really sure, so...

Apart from that detail...amazing. The waters, the ice, the sky...the swan-ships, the blood... Simply wonderful.
(wipes drool)
...there must be more more pictures like that...

ah yes.... this I think is one of the most tragic scenes in the book.... The Kin Slaying, the first spilling of elf blood by elf... And then the burning of the ships... those ships were to the Teleri what the Silmarils where to the Noldor... aaah so sad. This picture is so very well done..... Great job ^_^

Watecolors, kitteh? Oh, lol, several people have already observed/asked that. Lol, I'll really have to try and read the book again sometime. Maybe the LotR series too, since it's getting fuzzy. The smoke and the water and the night sky are... striking! Especially against the white of the ships.

You = fucking amazing >
