alt title is "Usopp's defining Giant Moment"

Taken from ch 119 pg3 from the Little Garden arc. This is after Usopp and Nami met the giant Broggy and learn of his100 years battle with his friend Dorry. Broggy also tells Usopp about Elbaf and the honor of the Elbaf gaint warriors. Usopp is greatly impressed by them, going as far as calling his friend "Teacher Broggy" and stating a desire to visit Elbaf someday.

There are two problems with the translation here. One is the name, 'Usop'. I'm assuming that its actally the same problem we had with a few other names (Chu, Jimbei/Jinbei) in One Piece, we didn't know the actual translation (Chew, Jinbe) until Oda cleared it up. The other mistranslation is the "great warrior of the seven seas" bit. I'm thinking that the translator did either a literal translation or subsituted their own for that.

Can anyone guess what is wrong with the saying "great warrior of the seven seas" is incorrect for One Piece?
hint
It should read "great warrior of the seas"

The "Seven Seas" is a Real World saying. There are not seven seas in One Piece, but five as far as most people in the storyline are concerned esp with the mapmakers. At this point in the OP storyline, (2nd island into the GrandLine, no one knew about the Sky Islands and White Sea, so the saying is not valid at this point.

But few people of the Blue Seas know about the White Sea and WhiteWhite Sea(if the mapmakers did, then it would be 7 seas)

Oda even has refered to them as the Five Seas (not including the white seas) =
1-East Blue
2-West Blue
3-South Blue
4-North Blue
5-Grand Line
Both parts of the Grand Line, Paradise and New World, are considered one sea on the maps even though the massive but narrow band of continital land, the Red Line, cuts it in two.

isn't the "All blue" technically a sea.

Also it be possible that the author planning seven sea when he was first writing One Piece then he decided to make only five.

No, since technically the "All Blue" doesn't exist. Its descrived as a mythical place which has no proof of its existance. As such it does not appear on the OP world map. Only the 5 seas listed does.

No, its not possible that the author meant the Seven Seas, it has been offically translated and Oda (the author) meant "Great Warrior of the Sea".
This "seven seas" was only found online on fan-translations.

From what I've read of Oda's talks and in the manga, the Calm Belts are not considered as separate seas, but side regions that outline the Grand Line. To us, it seems normal to count them as separate and therefore part of "Seven Seas". Heck I wanted to count them but if we count them then we have to count White Sea and WhiteWhite Sea then instead of 7, we get a total of nine.

In the OP the general population counts the Four Blues and Grand Line as the known seas. Don't know why they dodn't count the Calm Belts but they don't. Maybe its because of they are too dangerous to sailfor majority of people, most do not have access to seastone that Marines use to coat bottom of boats or the Yuda snakes that the Kuja use to travel the Calm Belts. General populace are unaware of those methods or of Haki (I think all the Yonku can use to scare Sea Kings away) so they think that no one can sail the Calm Belts.

while i agree with you, one could make an argument that there are seven seas in one piece. if one counts "paradise" and "the new world" as separate seas and then add on all blue there are seven

hmmm I thought I covered that, its the Grand Line. The New World and Paradice are merely sections of it since pople refer more to the Grna Line.

i know that, but many people regard the new world and grand line as two different oceans

www.mangareader.net/one-piece/… apparently there are 8 seas instead of seven, if the newest scanlations are to be believed.

Oh drat, double drat.... I can't see mangareader! I think its a 'copyright problem' so Mangareader is one of those that don't show OP in the USA.

.... any way you can take a image of that page?? I'd love to see what the said.

yeah it's a reference to a quote.. an idea really.
Read this at the Arlong Park forums=

"It's a concept in Nichiren Buddhism. According to Nichiren Buddhism, the world we live in is centered around a mountain, surrounded by 7 mountains and 8 seas, and the whole thing is surrounded by another mountain range, making it 9 mountains and 8 seas in total.
Within the seas are 4 continents. All of this make up one world. 1000 of these make up one minor thousand world. 1000 minor thousands make up a intermediate thousand world. 1000 intermediate thousands make up a big thousand world.
Hence, a big thousand (daisen) is made up of 3000 worlds (sort of...more like 1000 to the power of 3). " -Bon en Avent

Thanks! and wow... I didn't even realize I'm a chapter behind!! I though I've read the most recent!!

back on topic... that's odd for them to say "8 seas". I wonder if its a mistranslation or some reference to a quote.
