they are such interesting critters. we had a bunch this summer - sometimes as many as six or seven a night!

don't know your eastern birds but it may have been a phoebe...ours out here have a small crest and their coloring is kind of dusty gray/blue [link]

Nope, but thanks! It was about the same size (fatter for winter I guess). They were actually gray/blue in color, and had a more triangular crest. SO WEIRD.

I know of a first hand account of a hummer flying off with one attached - saw that - and while he didn't see the mantis actually eat the hummer, I tend to think that it could be possible...pretty dang amazing!
