Description There is a wild fire burning near my home (it is now about 65% contained and evacuations are being lifted so things are getting better) this was the first night when the fire was about five miles from me...the orange is the fire reflecting back on the smoke, not flames themselves...

Β smoke from my driveway on the 2nd day...

Don't want to jinx things but it seems that there are fewer fires being reported in the last few weeks but we're still a few months away from possible rain

I have been in the same situation here in Southern California several times! I am sorry to hear about the lost homes, that is very sad news!

Having lived all my life here in CA (south and north) I have to say categorically: I do not like the smell of smoke. Not even when I know it is a campfire in the dead of winter.Β Β  Here in the North people burn their leaves and downed branches in the fall - and it drives me crazy!!Β  The rancher below us, our first year here, started several burn piles on their property (down hill from us) and then...just left!!!!!!! Β  As we could see them continue to burn in the night my husband filled up the backpack weed sprayer with water and went down and put them out Β  We had a stern talking to with the rancher the next day......

The year we moved up here 2008 (had been with AllState since 1985) we got told that due to all the fires the previous year AllState was not issuing new policies in CA after being turned down by several other companies due to the hydrant issue, we finally got Hartford to take it as they'd been insuring the house for 10 years with the previous owners...but that sure was a rude awakening!Β  Thank goodness I'd just turned 50 and could join AARP and use Hartford through them!

YeaΒ  they used to solve a lot of problems for me too for AARP members.. The one I was working on was in a high fire area..and though they had done a lot to be proactive..it was a couple million dollar home..and even LLoyd's of London had issues with quoting..though they finally did.. for a small fortune..

The price for living in the trees.......

There was a drone video showing this last fire and it was very, very clear that people need to keep defensible space around their homes.Β  In the more open areas, like where I am, even on the hills - if the oak tree branches are up, the burning grasses just chew through the field but don't give the conflagration of a pine forest like at Tahoe...

davincipoppalag In reply to kayaksailor [2014-07-31 22:29:21 +0000 UTC]

yea.. that drone shot was cool but I understand they had to suspend firefighting planes when they saw it as they were afraid of collision... people can be dumb

My daughter and I were out on the deck watching the progress of the smoke - making sure it didn't swing back our direction when we realized we'd be able to see the plume and the milky way!!Β So we had to try for this

The county next to us was having their local County Fair (about 10 miles away as the crow flies) and we could see the fair's search lights upΒ in the sky - that's what gave the lighter blue cast in the lower right corner...we had NO IDEA we could see them!
