He was quite the show off and model wasn't he?   Really cool that you got a chance to get some really great shots, Ruth

Oh he was indeed showing off  So strange he was so comfortable with me being there - I stayed on the front porch - whenever we see them out in the fields, they take off like a shot!  Sadly he hasn't come back for a visit...at least not that we've seen

I STILL want to go smooshle his face  I have no idea what was so special about this day as he's never been back!! Or at least I've never seen him again...a much smaller female passed through a few weeks later - but only have seen them across the canyon since then, sadly...

A big focal length but still an amazing sight. I was geocaching once, struggling up a hillside, when I looked up and there was a bobcat standing on a rock about 50' uphill. Got one shot of him looking at me and one profile and then he trotted off. BIG CATS are impressive.

How exciting to see one out in the real wild!! That would be even more amazing than seeing this guy

I got asked if I was afraid at any point and I had to realize I hadn't even thought about being "afraid" I was too concerned about "it" being afraid of "me"!! Now if it had been a mountain lion, there would have been NO WAY I'd have gone outside ...well, maybe out on the back deck that is two stories up and has no access to the ground

We've seen them briefly, but this guy was so unafraid we watched him through several different windows and then after I'd gotten lots of shots through the glass I chanced going out onto the porch - staying out of sight until I got to the end and peeked around...he heard me (I saw his ears flick toward me) but he didn't stop his grooming or show any uncomfortableness at all so I just stayed there watching him stretch and curl up for a brief snooze and then he got up and meandered over to the tree and did the full out stretch up just like our house cats!!! As he wandered down out of sight of my porch I hurried inside and then out onto our second story deck where I watched him hunch down and eat something, hang there for a bit and then continue down the hill into the longer grass and trees it was suuuuch an experience! I later went and looked where he'd been nomming - it looked like he'd been chewing on some fresh grass

I have not seen one of those since my trip down the Mississippi. One popped up at a camp spot in Ark. He was carrying a snake in his mouth. I reached for the camera and he was gone in a flash...darn it...

kayaksailor In reply to RCPage [2012-01-31 05:10:32 +0000 UTC]

A snake?!!! Now that's a sight We've had those 'flash' views too, with only a couple of times being able to capture them...the gravel road to our house and the dirt road that heads out to the ranch next door shows lots of evidence of them/him but this was the first time one just hung out by the house

kayaksailor In reply to mydigitalmind [2012-01-31 03:20:15 +0000 UTC]

I just put a thumbnail of the first time up in the comments...we seen them rarely - though there is often evidence that we're on at least one's nightly patrol (scat on the dirt road ) My husband is the one who gets to seem them the most - he is an early riser and loves wandering around with his coffee...this one he saw from the bathroom window while he was showering, lol, and came running in to get me (and my camera)...I am soooo happy he did!!

mydigitalmind In reply to kayaksailor [2012-01-31 22:14:26 +0000 UTC]

That is awesome! I know they are in my area, but haven't seen any. That's one on my wishlist for sure!

kayaksailor In reply to mydigitalmind [2012-02-01 00:57:35 +0000 UTC]

I seem to see them at dawn on the property (love it that "dawn" is late this time of year as I'm not a really early riser) and early evening when on the road...but that makes it seem like we're always seeing them...and we're not ): less than a dozen sightings in the almost four years we've been here... but I'm keeping my eyes open for more

Interestingly enough, someone just forwarded me an article about Bobcats in my area. It's saying that there is an increase in populations due to the cats dispersing from PA. Unfortunately, with this new information, they are also trying to make it legal to hunt them here (it IS legal in northern NY and closer to the city). As much as I'd like to see one, I hope they are smart enough to not let people see them!!

kayaksailor In reply to mydigitalmind [2012-02-03 01:46:48 +0000 UTC]

Nooo! It is legal to hunt them in California, but they are not a game species and the export of their fur has been banned so the hunting of them has drastically fallen since the 70's...(I just did a bit of educating mysef never thought about anyone wanting to hunt them )
