Edit: I should edit to add that RD is not hurting her son intentionally. To her he is a reminder of her pain manifested. She doesn't realize until later that she was hurting him while she was focusing on her own hurt. But by the time she realizes what she has done, it's too late.

Gale is the first born son of Rainbow Dash. He grew up without a father and thus relied on his mother for all the affection and attention a growing foal should get. Of course as some of you know he didn't get much of that. His mother thought of him as a mistake and tried to keep her distance from him.

When Cloudburst was born things got worse. He was born out of a relationship of love. Therefore he was the preferred child for both Rainbow Dash and Dumbell. (Though Dumbell did attempt to bond with Gale some, he rejected his step father.)
