I know this is over two years since you asked this question, but I'm going to answer it anyways. Nu is the nucleophile (the molecule that is looking for something to attach to and share its electrons with, hence nucleophilic), and L means leaving group (the group that leaves in elimination and nucleophilic substitution reactions). As noted in the picture, it depends what reaction the molecule goes through, since it determines what happens (e.g. leaving group leaves first or at the same time etc.). Usually, it is better notation to have Nuc as the nucleophile and LG as the leaving group, but it's just notation so either way works. These are intermolecular reactions, but nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions can also happen intramolecular (within the same molecule). An example of a possible scenario for an intramolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction could be a deprotonated alcohol group attacking the molecule next to it, kicking off a good LG such as a halogen ion (e.g. Chloride) and forming an epoxide, which is a strained 3-member ring with an neutrally-charged oxygen. This is pretty basic stuff (no pun intended) so if you're unclear on something or curious, there are probably tons of examples for these mechanisms.

Well it's been years since I've had an O-Chem class, so my best guess is... they're both magic.

XD This made my day, especially after plowing through my Advance Organic project...
As for the oxymercuration mechanism, don't fret too hard about it. Trust remember that you form the mercurinium (I believe that's the correct term) ion as a bridge across the site of the double bond. From then on I believe it just follows a standard Markonikov-type addition.
The hyrdroboration mechanism I'm not so good at, so I don't think I can give any advice on that... I believe it's an E2 type elimination if memory serves me right, with a four-membered transition state... but I could be wrong.
All in all though, I wish you the best of luck on the final!

I like your sig, btw. It reminds me that I still need emo pants so I can dress up as an emo kid. I probably won't get REALLY tight ones though, even though that's the emo thing to do. That'd just feel wrong.
