Description EDIT 18/12/06: Updated image with better scan
8 x 10 brown ink and watercolor on 140lb watercolor paper

This is the first in a new series I'm working onIt will be winter scenery with animals I am familar with. So expect a couple more foxes, rabbits, mice and more. One down, 9 more to go.

my first deviation in a month! It has been too long, I have been in a funk lately where anything I did was not right. My brushstrokes are far from confident yet, but I will get there with each piece I do.

I like the linework on the foxes. It has a clean feel to it.

You've got a "somewhere between Japanese drawing and Calvin and Hobbes" thing going.

My only thought is that a lighter touch with the paint would allow the linework and design to shine through more.

Thank you for the detailed comment! I am at a interesting point with my work, I adore lineart/inking, it's one of my strengths, but I want to get away from it. Unfortunately I find it very difficult to execute a work without it. I still need lines as a guide for my coloring. I'm still gettting a feeling for color density and tone within a composition, once I get there, I hope to make watercolors without line.

I won't abandon line and inking though, I enjoy it too much.

Aww, they're so very cute, it reminds me of the foxes from The Animals of Farthing Wood. I used to watch the cartoon series of that when I was a child, I can't believe they haven't brought that out on dvd yet!

Thanks. OMG thank you so much for the mention of Farthing Wood. It is sad what doesn't make it across the pond. I am trying to read/see more children's literature and this looks like a great place to start. Colin Dann here I come!

Oh! I think this is one of my all time favorites so far! It makes me feel in the wintery spirit, and the expression on their faces really captures the spirit of the fox. I don't know if you've ever seen the cartoon Fox and the Hound, but this reminds me of it a lot and that was one of my favorite movies as a kid

Thank you! I think I've seen that movie, but I don't remember how it ends. I saw a commerical last night for "The Fox and the Hound 2" D*sney, where did your original works go.

I can definitely see improvement here!
(absolutely love the paws! )

Some green in the background could possibly help balance out the colours. Just blue and strong orange/red seems a little awkward...

KelliRoos In reply to fleetfoot [2006-12-07 03:59:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks fleetfoot! I did think about a tint of green in the background a couple times, I do think it would add another nice layer of color to the piece. hmmmm, I wonder if I can put a light wash over it now w/o ruining it.

shel1317 [2006-12-05 23:09:12 +0000 UTC]

The background is absolutely beautiful! Do you usually plan your paintings first with a pencil or do you just paint as you go?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KelliRoos In reply to shel1317 [2006-12-08 01:33:53 +0000 UTC]

So sorry for the late reply, I needed to type a bit for this one. Yes, all my watercolors I carefully plan ahead of time. I feel I am weak with compositions, so I am always testing new and different angles and arrangements of each piece I do. It is usually 3-10 sketches per finished work. I am getting alittle faster now.

Even when I sit down to do the final, I mess up something, or didn't see what that would look like and I do not like it. So I must discard the work and from the beginning the final artwork. Just ripped up a final ink yesterday. I hope to reink it tonight. I hope to someday be confident enough with my work to do less prep work, I really prefer to draw in that manner, and hope to paint successfully that way too.
