katara for me is the most diffecult character to understand...but I think she is the most unhappy character in the serise, even zuko seems happier than her sometimes. She is worrying all the time, for the team, for her family, nation, and the world. maybe those burden made her always serious. suffering, struggling, angry, fighting... Very personally thoughts.
... i just want to see her smile. ... that's it...

sorry, if you've seen a version of this pic with very pale skin, that was a mistake, I did it with a netbook, which screen was horrible!...

I agree, Katara is one of the most complex charters, I see it like this she lost her mother at the age of 8 I'm pretty sure, from there on out it was up to her to start helping out, she had to hunt for with Sokka, she was the one to clean and cook the food, the one to do most of the work and she had to do this all at a young age, she was forced to grow up. She took on so much and keeps going, she left with this young kid and her brother and stayed in her mother role, she took care of them, helped pick up ever ones emotional baggage, and the only one I ever saw break through her walls was Zuko, and that was in the caves under Be Sing se.
Katara, and Zuko are two of my favorite characters, along with Toph and for some reason I just like Ty lee too.

Haha, based on what I have learned from you in your comments on your art and journals, I can see Katara would be most difficult to understand.
For me, she is the most easy. Of all of the ATLA characters she is the one most like me.
Of course, I feel for ALL of the characters, they are all so wonderful and relatable. The fact that just about anyone can find at least ONE character they can have a personal connection with (like it seems you have with Azula) is a testament to how well done the series is.
This is a beautiful picture, of course. I don't even know what else to say about it. I love the lighting, the detail in her hair. It's quite pretty.

My coloring are all done in photoshop, so does most of the linears. it looks a bit different from classic photoshop arts probably because I made me own brush. I creat new brush by manipulating the brush setting of the basic brush, and colored in multipule layers for each part, especially hair,. so it could look more ramdom and organic. but it's still far different from a real brush, so sometime it go wrong easily...
