Description
Birth of a Legend
*Scene fades in to a low level shot near ground level of the skies over the Champs Dorés, where a number of Belkan fighters are flying about and making ready to return to their bases. A number of smoke plumes coming from multiple scattered locations on the ground can also be seen*
Simon (Narrating) –
That was the day our names first became known.
*Camera switches to a level shot of a Bf 109 E from its 10 o’clock as it rolls on its right side and drops down to a lower altitude to join a formation of three other Bf 109 E’s flying from right to left*
Nobody seems to pay much heed to the times that came before.
*Camera switches to a close shot of a 109’s cockpit from its 2 o’clock as another 109 flies up to it from the left.
*The pilot inside the cockpit signals the other to return to base, whereupon the second 109 turns left and flies away*
The times when we first bloodied our hands...
*Camera switches to a frontal close up shot of the pilot as he looks out the left side of the cockpit for a moment, then looks down to check the map on his left leg*
*Camera switches to a close shot of the pilot’s hand as he runs his index finger through the map, charting a course*
*Cut to a close shot of the words “Vautour Airbase” marking the base’s location on the map*
First felt the pain of loss...
*Camera now glides over the plains. Several scattered smokes plumes and a few plane wrecks can be seen*
No, most people begin telling our tale here:
*Camera switches to a shot showing a crashed M.S.406 up close, off-centred to the right, wedged into the ground nose first*
The day FATO’s hopes for an effective resistance died, along with two thirds of its fighter squadrons.
*Shot dissolves into another scene as the M.S.406 is replaced by a smoking Char B1bis heavy tank shown in profile from its left side*
*Behind the tank (to its right) is a road where a column of Panzer III medium tanks and Opel Blitz trucks orderly drive past from left to right*
Without support from the air, their ground forces were all but helpless against the relentless waves of airstrikes and mechanized assaults that cleaved their way through them.
*Switch to a shot of a map of FATO’s northern shores. Most of the country is coloured yellow, under Belkan control, except for an area of land beyond the coast*
*The yellow territory gradually advances until it converges on the base of the Colbert Peninsula. As it reaches the coast, several pockets of unpainted territory remain, but are quickly painted over as they fall to Belkan attacks*
FATO put up a valiant fight, but it was already a foregone conclusion.
*The yellow territory pushes into the Colbert Peninsula, gradually creeping up until it covers it entirely*
Once their last troops were squeezed into the Colbert Peninsula, those who could not be evacuated by sea either fell or surrendered.
FATO and Recta had capitulated. Belka was victorious.
*Camera fades out*
*Camera fades back in, now showing the inside of an office where several officers (including Col. Fleisher) are in, four of which are lined up in front of a general officer and his adjutant, who is holding an open box with medals inside*
*The general officer goes to take a medal from the box*
With such a stunning triumph delivered to them, High Command was feeling rather generous,-
*Close three quarter angle shot of the upper chest of one of the officers as he is bestowed with a Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross*
-so they decided to reward their star players in the same way they always do:
*Camera cuts to a shot further away from the same angle, revealing the officer to be Patrick, who then salutes the (off-camera) general officer who presented him the Knight’s Cross. This shot also shows him bearing both the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, pinned to his left breast pocket and worn on the second buttonhole of his tunic respectively, and the rank insignias of a First Lieutenant (Oberleutnant) (he had been a Second Lieutenant (Leutnant) up to this point)*
*Camera switches to a shot of the four lined up Dracos from the front, standing at attention. Michael is at the far left, followed by Patrick, Simon and Reinhardt to the far right. Both Michael and Simon are now also bearing Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Class, while Reinhardt, who has had all three awards since his introduction, has had Oak Leaves added to his Knight’s Cross*
With conferrals of honours and orders to redeploy elsewhere.
*Transition to a map of the Osean Continent. The map starts centred roughly between Belka and FATO, then slowly scrolls down South, descending slightly to the right*
*Coloured troop movements on the map reveal that Belka has invaded Sapin from the Ustian and Ratian borders, but the gained territory is inconsistently spread, with some spearheads driving far deeper into Sapin than others. Most noticeably, the troop movements reveal that Sapin has conquered a land corridor through central Ratio all the way to the Wielvakian border, cutting off eastern Ratio, and has even made some advances into this isolated territory*
With the North now secure, Belka turned its attention to the South, where Sapin had held firm following the initial Blitzkrieg and stalled out our offensives. With eastern Ratio isolated from the empire and Osean reinforcements coming in from across Oured Bay, the Southern Front was intensifying rapidly.
*Map stops scrolling when it reaches about the halfway point of the border between Spain and Ratio, then slowly zooms in*
And that’s where the war took us next.
*Scene fades out*
