Description The reason why this came it me is that I do noticed one common thing about most book-adaptation movies have: Most of the movies were hated by the original aurthors of the books.

Raul Dahl hated most of the movie-adaptation of his books, from "Willy Wonka" to "The Witches (with the acception of the animated "BFG" movie)

E.B White hated Hanna-Barbera's take on "Charlotte's Web" (because it was made into a musical). If he was still alive, he would hate the adaptation "The Trumpet of the Swan" as well.

You might be thinking, "Hey Walt Disney's staff didn't read the original Jungle Books either, and yet their animated movie became a hit."
Despite the movie getting positive reviews, and is a classic, the one person that truly hated the movie was Rudyard Kiplings daughter, Elsie.

She hated Disney's adaptation so much, she even hated how they misprounced Mowgli's name.
And she hasn't forgive Disney for making that movie ever since.

So for those people in Hollywood: Stay true the books when making movies out of them to please both the audience and the aurthor (or their family members).

Another rule:
Don't let other adaptations get the better of you.
In simpler terms, don't brag that your movie would be nothing like the Disney adaptation when the Disney adaptation is the reason you're making the adaptation in the first place or that you might be more inspired by the Disney version than the original story or you end up making the adaptation more Disney than the Disney adaptation.

At the same time, don't let the goal of the adaptation be "not be the Disney movie" when you clearly only adding book elements to your Disney-inspired (or something like that) adaptation.

What works as a book doesn't always work as a film, and the reverse is also sometimes true, sad but there it is.

It's well-known that Stephen King hates Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining for many reasons - especially the drastic changes.

P.L. Travers hated Disney's Mary Poppins. She opposed the various changes, such as the setting change to 1910 instead of the 1930s, changing Mary Poppins' personality from cold and sarcastic to warm and sugary, and just about everything else.

For those who thought The Lorax was bad, Audrey Geisel (Dr. Seuss' widow) was absolutely repulsed by the live-action Cat in the Hat and refuses to allow any more live-action adaptations of her husband's works.

Well Roald Dahl's family liked Tim Burton's adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I really didn't like the film version of Philip Pullman's "Northern Lights/The Golden Compass". So many good actors (Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, Freddy Highmore) wasted on such a shit movie.

That or The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz. The 1939 movie was (and I know this may sound sacrilegious) horrible. They messed up the plot. Let me give you an example for those who never read the book, it wasn't a dream. It was real. Dorothy had been to another world. The stage version of The Wiz and movie Return To Oz was better because it was dark and took more from the books than the so-called original movie version was.

I love The Wizard Of Oz, it is my favorite movie, even if I have never read the book that it was based on. I think that Dorothy really did go to Oz, but no one believed her because no time had passed in between the time she left Kansas, landed in Oz, and returned home. But, I greatly respect your opinions on how you feel about the movie, I just wanted to share my opinion with you.

Actually Aunt Em and Uncle Henry noticed that Dorothy was gone in the book. But the thing is they left out some characters from the book. Characters like the Kalidahs, the field mice, the wolves, the bees, the crows, the Quadlings etc. If you want to know more about these people read the book.

I think that those characters you just mentioned probably would've been a nice addition to the movie, but don't you think it would of been too long if they had been put in there?

Good question. The book itself was long. It was 200 something pages long. Plus MGM couldn't get away with some of the characters considering the imagination of the 30s. But they could have let Disney animate it. It's true Disney tried to turn it into an animated feature. But later discovered someone else bought the rights to the book.

I read about those facts on one website that has a lot of questions and answers about the Oz series, but I had no idea that the book was that many pages long. I also know that Disney later made Return To Oz in the 1980's, but they had to pay money to MGM in order to use the ruby slippers.

I think that they were going to for the MGM movie, but they changed it because the movie was made using the Technicolor process.

They never stayed true with The Neverending Story. Michael Ende tried everything to make them stop production or at least change the name of the movie. All because they never made it "Arcane and Magical". They never did. He tried to sue them but he lost the case. That's basically what happens when you're not a big enough author.

The people in Hollywood did read the books. If they didn't then they wouldn't be able to make it. Sometimes they make changes in order of Movie length, and to make the audience understand what's going on.

Not all author's hate the movies their books are made into. I pretty sure Elise doesn't hate Disney forever just for one stupid movie.

Yes, I agree. There were some book-based movies that I wished were done better such as Ella Enchanted, Thumbelina (1994) and Pride and Prejudice (2005).

I read that the author, Naoko Takeuchi, who wrote the manga, Sailor Moon, didn't like the Toei's tv anime version of it.
In 1985, Disney made a film, called the Black Cauldron, which was loosely based on the Chronicles of Prydain. The movie bombed b/c not only it wasn't as charming as the previous Disney films but also, it strayed way far from the books. The original author, Lloyd Alexander, didn't like the movie came out, either. He said, "There is no resemblance between the movie and the book," Although, he admitted that he enjoyed the film, he still hoped that viewers would read his books because they had more depth.

It's the fact that most book writers hate the film adaptation of their books that makes me wonder if Peter Benchley hated Steven Spielberg's adaptaion of his book Jaws.

He didn't mind it at first, but he didn't like the sequels. The book was a stand-alone work without any sequels. He also grew to hate it because he thought the movie popularized a lot of misconceptions about sharks that led to increased shark hunting.

yh i gotta agree, as a book addict i hate it when the movie ofa book turns out shit. thought there are several good ones but plnty of bad ones too. like the saga of darren shan, the book series were great but the movie actually made no sense

my fave book of all time, dragon rider by cornelia funke, has no movie which on one hand is disapointing, but on the other hand if they made a movie of it i just know it'd be shit ¬_¬
