Description Reaping of the Spirit

Acrylic on canvas
25,5 cm x 51 cm
2012

Model: Asa Dillenbeck

Private collection

For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. (Galatians 6:8)

This painting is a kind of follow-up to Despising the shame with Asa Dillenbeck as model again. fav.me/d4cqz9m A plentiful harvest is a natural result of a sowing of good seed and hard ploughing. Inspired from Galatians 6:8, this picture illustrates the satisfaction and peace, but also the blessing that comes from investing in the Spirit and refusing to follow the passions of the flesh, the dove symbolizing the Spirit, and the caged crow, the sinful nature.
The dove appears to be a continuation of the boy’s shirt as he has put on the new man: "And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." (Ephesians 4:24)

He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. (Psalm 126:6)

A photograph of Asa by Louis Comeau was used with his kind permission.

I finished it before starting my lessons... I don't know, I guess I used a photo with the sun blasting on the model's face, so that created a special lighting... I tried to be as realistic as possible with that. Also, it was too big for my scanner, so my niece took a digital photo of it for me. That might explain a difference in the colours? Although it's pretty close to the original...

Your style in this painting seems pretty different from others, like the the shadows and the colour saturation. Did you choose to do that just for this painting or is that the influence of the painting classes?
