My name actually is Cal. Some of my friends, being the nerds we are, started calling me Calcifer a few years ago, and it kind of stuck with my online handles.
Also, I absolutely love the book. probably more than the film version. I'm reading the third book in the series now

They changed a whole lot. It's not really wrong though, just different. I still love the movie, but as I've read elsewhere, he changed it from being a Diana Wynne Jones Story to being a Hayao Miyazaki story.
Ms. Jones loved it when they screened it for her though. The story goes that at the dinner afterwards she spent so much time talking to Miyazaki that they had to switch translators part way through so the first one could actually have time to eat.
I'd still be happy if they did one that stayed closer to the book though, maybe in live action. I'd also like the sequel books to be adapted, but I don't see that happening.

I don't know about a scene, but The Witch of the Waste is completely different in the book. She's a much more important villain and has a fire demon of her own. Part of the book also takes place in Wales, where it turns out Howl is from.
