Description Station Twelve
"Jesus Dies"
(The Crucifixion)

Mixed media oilgraph on canvas with blood.
36"x36"

History
The Stations of the Cross are the fourteen traditional panels
depicting the final moments of Christ's life starting with his condemnation
to death at the hands of Pilate to his crucifixion and burial in the tomb. Over
the years pilgrims would go to Jerusalem and walk the route Jesus took on his
way to the cross, stopping at moments along the way to remember, reflect and
pray. The Stations began appearing in the middle ages when pilgrims were forbidden
to enter Jeruselem when it was occupied by the Turks. They made the Stations
as a way to remember in Spirit back in their own countries. Long considered
only a Catholic tradition, they are now finding a popularity across all traditions.
These are my versions. This journey started in January of this year and the
last of the Fourteen was completed April 4th.

What a powerful image! The colors suit it perfectly, they give it a kind of grimness and a feeling of suffering.

Thank you...well, it's a physical piece, not digital, so the texture is a physical texture. I use any number of gel mediums from thick gel to self-leveling gel. I think this was the heavy gel I was using with the oil paint over top. Thanks again and I hope that helps....

Actually the base is a wooden panel and yes, the paintings are oil paint.

Thank you...this one fought me coming into being. I had five days to paint the entire series and this one was on the last night just after midnight. It was worth the fight. Of all the pieces that have come through me, this one I think is the most...special...

Thank you again...

I was wondering if I could use this picture in a book that I am writing for my final project in college? I am more than willing to send a copy of the final project when it's done. All I would need is a year and a name to accredit to the piece if you say yes. It's perfect of the heading of my prologue, so if you'd be willing to contribute I would be very happy. Thanks and even if not, thank you for reading my post. Take it easy.

Thank you for asking, but I don't license any of this series except for very particular projects. Sorry about that, but I appreciate you asking. Most people would have just used it...

Good luck with the project!

Thank you for responding. I appreciate it. Nothing worse than someone never getting back to you. Well, I guess the search continues. Keep up the fabulous work. I am a picky person when it comes to my influences for these projects. So, be honored I considered it! It means that it's really good and is very appropriate for the piece I was doing. If you ever want a read of the book, let me know. The least I could do for you being courteous to me. Thanks again. Take it easy.

Stunning work. I've seen this image depicted so many times in my life, but I've never seen anything like this.
Aside from being an amazing piece it's so hope-inspiring too. The darkness of the lower half of the piece looks to me like it signifies death and suffering but then the glowing aura of colour, and what looks like a halo of light around Him at the top, perfectly illustrates the instant ascension as it occurs.

Yup, that'll be a fav then! lol

The most beautiful, and moving piece in the series for me. It hits me like a brick to the chest everytime. Yet, despite being a death, you manage to keep a sense of such great hope in here. "Beautiful" seems too small a word to describe it... but it's the best I can do.

Thank you for this one... it speaks so loud to me.

today in class we studied the Sistine Chapel. to see another one of these from the series, i would honestly hope one day to see these in a cathedral, they deserve such. their own chapel. these pieces strike into the christian tradition in a way that nothing in contemporary christian art has done as of late. they reach into the earliest representations of catholic art, but photographically show that this tradition is not yet gone. secularization has not killed all religiousity.

i hope that this series will be available as a print from you. the whole collection, a package. i would love to buy an original, hopefully not for sale, (but, thus wasting all of my paychecks), but i think that the prints would be wonderful arrranged in my bedroom. (i just moved into a new house and am decorating.) a reminder of this lovely tradition.

cold tones at the bottom, the warmth contained in between his angelic like arms pose. his rising. his transcendence, "father forgiven them." loss of self, loss. annihiliation.

//

as for the Shroud of Turin. I reject it's authenticity. You could do your own, just as a portrayal. I mean there are numerous ones that is half of the fun in them, they're all just symbols...and you could attempt to form your own. There is the theory of the Turin Shroud having been commissioned by the Church to Leonardo da Vinci (and the image of Christ there being a self-portrait of the master himself.) You deserve an attempt. If you need to know how to make your own shroud I could give you some techniques used previously.

I think out of all of them that I have seen, (and faved, haha) this is the most powerful to me. This is what it was all about right here. The sufferings of Christ, for us. The image of fire here, in my interperation, representing Christ bearing all sin. And for this one moment He's seperated from the Father because of all this sin that he burdens for us. This is just astounding and a great and perfect reminder of what He's done for us... and who am I that He died for me?

I've been following your journals and pictures since I first stumbled across your work on DeviantArt. They have always been breathtaking, powerful, evocative. But, for me, this is it. I'm not a deeply religious person, but for some reason, somehow, this particular station brought tears to my eyes. Thats incredible. That's true art. Thank you for giving me the privelage of experiencing these works, I am truly honoured.
