Description If you're not familiar with the traditional stations of the cross, they are a series of images (14) that depict the passion of christ. This is the 10th: 'christ is stripped'

Fourteen different artists were commissioned to do the series. For some reason they gave me this one....

who initiated the series?? sounds very interesting... if i may ask - what's your attitude towards religion? i mean... you succeeded brilliantly in capturing the emotions behind the story of the passion of christ. i guess due to that there HAS to exist a kind of attitude... excuse me if the question is too personal. i was only wondering.

(good to see new pieces of art from you btw )

So finally I have to time to write back....

I was asked by a seminary to do it. They gave me this one intentionally I'm sure. Funny I'm commenting on this one now. I was just asked to speak at a major conferance back east on this subject. I plan to have the entire 14 peice series done by then...Not that I know how.... Was up till 4AM last night doing preliminary research.

Hmmm....my thoughts on religion....
Well, I make a huge distinction between " religion" and faith.
To keep it simple....Faith is where I'm at....
So, you're quite right....We can always talk more about this... I'm very open to discussion...

and naturally...thank you (as always!)

I wasn't going to comment, as there isn't usually really anything much I can say that does your art much justice. But now I can't not say anything afterall. Even if it is just a little discovery I made about art involving the stations of the cross.

I, too, grew up catholic and I never appreciated the story and much less the usual images. This one - in spite of the subject - I like (and not only because you did it). I cannot recall a single work of art showing the stations of the cross that has any yellow in it for the sheer sake of hinting at light in a passionate sense. All the artistic passion usually goes into the dark colors for gloom and the glistening white of heaven/god/eternity. And that is why I do like the way you interpreted it.

wow....thank you.
This has seemed to be the common response and I'm really amazed and honored by it...
And though not Catholic myself either, I think I am going to do the entire series.....
It's thoughts such as yours that have inspired me...

thank you again...

Well, It's obvious why they chose you. You did a hell of a job. I actually like the choice of "Jesus." Not very typical, but extremely realistic. The eyes are great there, love how there's a hint of fire In there, great little detail.

Thank you for seeing that.... I'm about to do the entire series with the same model (my friend Paul) who just happened to be available at the right time....and it felt like the right choice.

i like the flavor that you added to the " via crucis" the combination and the contrast of the sharp and the dull colors renders the image powerful without being too overbearing, sensous yet not without an imposing message.

thanks a lot! i knew my eyes did not deceive me when i first saw ur works. hehehe

you know, i am not really much one for religious images, and i guess it is even worse of me to say because i am a catholic. or maybe it was too many annunciation pictures i saw from my art history class. but anyways...

this is a very nice image. i can't remember what some of the other ones are but this is a very nice image. while the content is not really original, because there are so many different variations of the stations of the cross, and i am not meaning on dev art, but you know in general, this one by far stands above them all. it's an orginal idea and not a traditional approach. excellent job.

keep up the great work.

you know, after i read other people's comments i realized, that i too hated sitting and listening to all that stuff when i was in grade school and high school. i went to a catholic school all through 1-12, but if you ever made an entire stations of the cross series, i could handle sitting through it. i'd love to see you do a series of them actually.

glad i could make your day, and you know what? i think this is the most constructive comment i have ever made on someone's work. so feel extra special.

best wishes!

Mary

this is really fucking awesome. haha to tell you the truth i always hated the stations of the cross. we were forced to sit there and listen to the 14 prayers and all that it took hours. the stations we had to look at wer so lifeless and dull. they were wood carvings but they were poorly done and really did not show the pain or shame of what christ had to go through. your picture really captures the emotion of the stripping of christ. the embarrassment of having his clothes ripped from his body in front of everyone. you did an amazing job definitely a fav.

wow, thanks so much. I had the same feeling you did growing up. When my friend gave me this one to do I thought, 'ok, how far do I go?' I was concerened how it was going to get recieved. (It was a seminary who commissioned us) As opposed to offense...they put it in the chapel itself.
There's hope!

that is awesome. well i think you did a really good job showing what it must have been like to go through humiliation like that. i really cant stand the wood carvings i see in my church, they just dont mean anything.
